Monte Scott Larson, age 62, passed away at home on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24. Monte was born in Osage to John and Marlene (Carstens) Larson and was a resident of Jefferson from the age of thirteen to present. He graduated from Jefferson Community High School in 1978 and earned a degree in printing and graphics from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. He worked for the Jefferson Bee for several years. He also worked in his brother’s decorative concrete business and ran a forklift at his last job.
Monte was best known for his exceptional talent as a drummer in school bands, especially the Jack Oatts Jazz Band, for which his solos drew cheering and clapping from the audience. Monte continued this passion for his drums throughout adulthood. He was an avid golfer and decked out his golf cart with various NFL team’s logos and colors as he loved watching football as well.
Monte was also involved in local theater in Jefferson and added his own personality to the interesting characters he played. Monte was a smart, loving, caring person who loved to reminisce about his childhood and good times with family and friends. He had stories to tell and possessed a bright, unbelievably accurate memory of past events and loved playing trivia at weekly games at Hy-Vee.
Monte enjoyed being an uncle to Kelsey, Carter, Connot, Emilie, Jackson, and Josie, and spending time with them when they visited.
Though he wasn’t able to meet his great nephew, Luca, he loved seeing his pictures on Facebook.
Monte is survived by his mother, Marlene Larson; brother, Chris Latson and his children, Carter and Connor; sister, Kimberly Zumbo, her husband Frank, and their child, Kelsey, her husband Varinder, and their child, Luca; brother, Michael Larson, his wife Kim, and their children, Emilie and Jackson; and sister, Sara Swarbrick, her husband Eric, and their child, Josie.
