Zelma Dyer

Zelma Dyer, 97, of Jefferson passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 at Greene County Medical Center.

A service of remembrance was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 24 at Central Christian Church in Jefferson with Pastor Troy Emley and Pastor Sheldon Henderson officiating. Congregational hymns were “In The Garden” and “Because He Lives,” accompanied by Pat Emley. Honorary bearers were Brent Emley, Eric Emley, Alex Emley, Nolan Emley, Troy Haight, Bruce Klinzman and Dallas Schrader. Casket bearers were Will Emley, Bob Emley, Don Ahrens and Brad Klinzman. Following the funeral, the family visited with friends during a luncheon in Fellowship Hall. A private burial will take place at a later date at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.

Zelma Irene Dyer was born June 25, 1920 in Bayard, Iowa. She was the daughter of William A. Klinzman and Ferne I. (Bacon) Klinzman. At an early age, Zelma and her family moved to Bagley, Iowa. Zelma became a member of the Church of Christ in 1932. She graduated from Bagley High School in 1937.

In January 1940, Zelma married Donald Dyer of Perry. In April 1943 the couple moved to Los Angeles, California at the start of World War II. They resided in California until November 2000.

Zelma transferred her church membership to Inglewood, California. She was a member of Women of the Moose and served as president from 1958 – 1959. She worked most of her life in California as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1982.

Following Don’s death in 2000, Zelma returned to Iowa and took up residence in Jefferson. She became a member of Central Christian Church in Jefferson.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a sister, Loretta Russell; and a brother, Darwin Klinzman.

Survivors include her sister, Jane Emley of Jefferson; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; other relatives and friends.  

Memorials are suggested to Central Christian Church or Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care.

Services were arranged by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home, Jefferson.
