Donald Ralph Benson, 86, of Jefferson, died Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa.

A service of remembrance was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 at The Dwelling Place in Jefferson. Words of comfort were provided by Rev. Rod Block. Honorary casket bearers were “Grandsons”: Noah Benson, Jon Benson, Bob Benson, Dan Benson, Matthew Benson, Andrew Benson, Ben Altes, Steven Johnson, Justin Benson, Nick Benson and Joe Benson. Casket bearers were Gerry Halterman, Tom Yepsen, Greg Karber, Marvin Rasmussen, Doug Waldo and Nelson Carman. The music played was “Praise Him”, “Hope Of The World”, “I Surrender” and “Cornerstone”. Interment was at Jefferson Cemetery.

Donald Benson was born on May 5, 1929 to Ralph and Helen (Custer) Benson in Ames, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Jefferson, where he attended school and graduated in 1947.

He met Kathleen Joan Dool while in school at Iowa State University in Ames and they were united in marriage on November 22, 1950. Don was farming the family farm where he grew up and that’s where they started their married life. They were blessed with five children: David, William, Richard, Teresa and Michael.

Don had a dairy operation until 1965, and continued to have a diversified farming operation with hogs and cattle over the years. In 1957, he was presented the Outstanding Young Farmer Award by the Jefferson Jaycees. He served in the Iowa National Guard, served on both the Greene County Fair Board and the Jefferson Community School Board and was a 29 year Rotary Club member. Don’s great grandfather was one of the first settlers in Greene County and Don was able to accept a Heritage Farm award for the home farm at the Iowa State Fair in 2009. Over the years Don always liked to keep on the cutting edge of agriculture.

Don was an entrepreneur. He was always looking for new challenges. Don and Kathy met while roller skating before they started dating, so building a skating rink in Jefferson was a dream of theirs. Maranatha Skateland was a place that the youth of the community could spend their weekends, and Don and Kathy enjoyed their time operating it, as well as the second one they built in Carroll. Even in his later years, he met many people who “grew up” in the skating rinks and even took their own children there. Don and Kathy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on November 22nd. Kathy was the love of his life, and they were very seldom apart. Their years together were always full of adventure, on the farm and on the many family vacations and all the traveling they have done in their retirement years. He looked forward every summer to family vacation trips to lakes in Wisconsin and Iowa as well as camping trips to Colorado. Don loved to drive the boat while the kids waterskied, and we have pictures proving that he once skied himself with his hat on. The most memorable trip he and Kathy made in later years was a two month trip to Alaska in their motor home.

Serving the Lord was very important to both Don and Kathy. They have been active in their church all their lives. Don was a leader in the local Full Gospel Businessmen chapter in Jefferson. He also helped to bring Billy Graham evangelistic films to the community. A men’s bible study was held in the Benson basement for many years until Don’s health began to fail. He has ministered over the years to many young men and helped guide them in their faith and has built many lasting friendships.

Family was Don’s most important legacy. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; a sister-in-law, Virginia Downs; his children, Dave (Karen) Benson of West Lafayette, IN; Bill (Molly) Benson of Carroll, Iowa; Dick (Denise) Benson of Tulsa, OK; Teri (Paul) Johnson of Deep River, IA; and Mike (Kris) Benson of Jefferson; his grandchildren Noah Benson, Kyle (Erick) Morales, Samantha (Greg) Pauley, Janelle (Justin) Kaiser, Bob Benson, Elizabeth Benson, Jon Benson, Dan Benson, Matthew (Allison) Benson, Andrew Benson, Jenny (Trung) Tran, Ben Altes, Katey Johnson, Steven Johnson, Justin Benson, Nick Benson and Joe Benson; eight great grandchildren; and many, many friends.

Memorials may be left to The Dwelling Place in Jefferson, IA or New Hope in Carroll, IA. Services were arranged by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home of Jefferson.

George Drulias, 86, died Tuesday, January 12, 2016.

George was born in Los Angeles, California and moved with his mother, Burdena Hendersen, to Des Moines, Iowa at the age of three.  George was proud to attend Kemper Military School in Missouri for grades 8-12.

George was the leader of Kemper’s military band and a competitive track athlete who won the Missouri state championship in the half mile.  It was only natural that George returned to Iowa to enroll at Iowa State University.  During his senior year of college, he made his first trip back to California and by chance met his lovely bride, Lucy.
George and Lucy were married and raised their two children, Debbie and Steve, in what is now called “Silicon Valley” an area of the San Francisco Bay Area.  George’s primary work was a corporate negotiator specializing in government intelligence contracts.  George loved spending time with his family, traveling, attending sporting and music.  Demonstrating his lifelong fondness for Iowa, George closely followed the Iowa State University Cyclones even while spending the majority of his life in California. While he was a huge sports fan, his biggest delight was his two children and he remained in close contact with both of them.

For the last 25 years, George and Lucy were both residents of the beach community Leucadia, where George avidly swam at the Encinitas YMCA and attended all types of musical productions. Lucy and George were married 64 years and were together almost every day of their lives. George remained vibrant and sharp minded until he passed unexpectedly at the age of 86 from a stroke.

George absolutely adored dogs and most of the family dogs were rescues. In lieu of any flowers or other donations, we ask instead that you consider a donation to the “George Drulias Memorial Fund” at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, 389 Requeza Street, Encinitas, CA 92024.  A Memorial Service will be held later this spring in Encinitas, Calfornia.

Jim Rasmussen ended his work on this earth on January 8, 2016.  Born to Danish immigrant, Carl Rasmussen and his wife Maude (Howell), in Coon Rapids, Iowa, Jim attended a one-room school and then graduated from Coon Rapids High School.  He was the eldest son in a farm family who all learned the value of family and work during the 1930’s Great Depression.  The family moved to Greene County in 1941.  Jim entered the military in 1943 serving in the Philippines during World War II becoming a staff sergeant in a medical supply unit.  Jim married Hazel Whitver in 1950, and they farmed in Bristol Township.  They raised three sons: Joe (wife Martha) of Solon, David (wife JoAnn) of Jefferson, Mark (special friend Rita Olsthoorn) of Jefferson, and were proud to put all three through college.  Jim and Hazel expanded their diversified farming operation through much hard work.  As a family farm of that era, they had a range of livestock, milk cows, and crops.   Jim was an avid cattle feeder for 61 years and served on the Greene County Extension Council, the Cattlemen’s Association and the beef department of the county fair. He also enjoyed playing cards and talking with anyone.  Jim and Hazel were league bowlers and original members of Lakeside golf course.  Both served several different positions in their church.  He continued farming into his 90’s.  Retirement was not in his vocabulary.

Jim is survived by his three sons and six grandchildren: Lisa (Justin Ott) of Nevada, Dan and Kate both of Kansas City, Sarah of Muscatine, Chris of Iowa City, and Alex at the University of Iowa.  Two great-grandchildren, Trevor and Carver Ott.  Jim has two surviving brothers, L. Ruth Emma Louise Trost, beloved sister and aunt, was born September 4, 1922 to Adolf O. and Laura B (Nahnsen) Trost.  She came from humble beginnings and humble she remained over her 93 years.  The Trost family lived in a parsonage in Farnhamville at the time of Ruth’s birth and her father baptized her at his St. Peter’s parish on September 22, 1922.  She was later confirmed by him at his other parish Christ Lutheran.  Ruth attended elementary school in Farnhamville and later in Churdan when the family moved in 1932.  Ruth graduated from Churdan High School in 1940 and in 1943 the family moved to Jefferson.  Ruth worked at Shelby Produce Company, the Gold Medal mail order company, Food and Fruit Market, and Baller’s Auto and Home Supply.  She also worked at Jefferson State Bank (later Brenton Bank) in Jefferson until she retired in 1988.  She sold the family home in 1994 and moved to the Greenewood Retirement Community.  Ruth was blessed to be able to live out her life independently in her apartment overlooking the golf course.

Ruth was devoted to her church and was active in LWML and the Fellowship Society.  She used her talents and gifts as church historian keeping all of the events of the church documented in scrap books and photo albums.  Ruth was also responsible for the creation and care of Trinity’s Flower Garden and worked many hours keeping it looking beautiful for everyone to enjoy.  Ruth’s love of music led her to join the vocal and handbell choirs and she faithfully served as the church organist for 43 years.  She especially enjoyed organ music.  Ruth had a gift for crafting.  She created the Chrismons that are used to decorate the church’s Christmas tree every year.  She made ornaments for her family and friends, always sharing her gifts with others.  She loved to read, and put together puzzles and she had a great love for nature as was evident from all of the bird feeders situated outside her window.  She loved to sit in her chair and watch the birds come up and eat.  She was a regular letter writer and kept in constant contact with all of her family and friends through letters and greeting cards.  She had a gift of making others feel special.  Ruth was probably best remembered for her love of angels.  She always wore an angel pin on her clothing and her home was decorated with angels everywhere you looked.  Those that knew her came to understand that she was so connected because she was an angel on Earth.  Ruth was taken to heaven on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Greene County Medical Center.

Elks Service was at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 27 with Bill Berger presiding.

Clair Earnest Cairns was born March 12, 1944 in Jefferson, Iowa. He was the son of Curtis Cairns and Ruby Reta Raver Cairns. Clair lived in Farlin his whole life. Being a kid in Farlin meant doing your chores first, then playing outside until supper time. Clair attended Farlin country school where he graduated from the eighth grade. He talked often about the amazing Christmas programs they had and that people filled the building to watch. He then attended Jefferson high school and graduated with the class of 1963. During his high school years, Clair baled hay, shelled corn and mowed yards. He saved his money and paid cash for his first car, a candy apple red 1963 Chevy Corvair. Clair joined the Air Force National Guard in 1965 and went to boot camp in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was trained in electronics in a radio relay unit and did radio maintenance. He traveled to Saudi Arabia and Norway with the guard.

On September 30, 1966, Clair married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Boyd, at the Central Christian Church in Jefferson. They were the proud parents of two children, Shelley and Robin. Clair farmed until 1977. He then worked for Star Carriers in Jefferson as a mechanic. He also worked for Harrison Ford for many years. Clair, always a farm boy, was happy to return to farm work for a time as a hired hand for Bob Safley. Clair then got a job at Frigidaire in Jefferson where he worked for twenty-five years, retiring ten years ago. At this time of his life, Clair once again returned to what he really loved, farming, this time with Nick Foster. Through the years, Clair did lots and lots of yard mowing. One of his mowing responsibilities was the Oak Hill Cemetery. He mowed there for more years than can be remembered, and he will be laid to rest in that cemetery.
Clair loved cats and dogs. Goldie, the cat, was his comfort and always napped with him in his favorite chair. In retirement, Clair kept busy repairing anything broken, refinishing furniture, and sometimes rebuilding furniture back to a usable piece. He found great joy in bringing furniture back to use and beauty. The grandkids always said, “If it’s broken, give it to Grandpa, he can fix everything!” Clair’s grandkids were the light of his life. He enjoyed pulling them on sleds with his mower, giving rides on his childhood go-cart and on his little Allis Chalmers tractor. Clair helped the grandkids with their 4-H projects and watched them show animals at the county and state fair.

Clair was a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #2396 in Jefferson. He served as chaplain. He belonged to bowling leagues in Grand Junction and Jefferson. For many years, Clair drove his Allis Chalmers tractor in the Bell Tower Parade. He was an officer in the Two Cylinder Tractor Club. Clair always looked forward to the WHO Radio tractor rides. He collected Ertl toy tractors.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cairns of Jefferson, IA; daughters: Shelley (Scott) Fairbairn of Prairie City, IA and Robin (Charles Jr) Gunn of Jefferson, IA; seven grandchildren: Brittany, Elizabeth, Hannah, Charles, Connor, Nora and Dylan; brother, Robert (Yvetta) Cairns of Jefferson, IA; and sisters-in-law: Kris (Jim) Konradi of Storm Lake, IA and Paula (Jim) Brown of Gaffney, SC; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Sara Melson

Sara Blosser Melson, 97, a longtime Jefferson resident, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2016 in Silverdale, Washington, with family by her side.

Sara was born April 3, 1918 in Dunlap, Indiana, the daughter of Christian Brenneman and Carrie Mae Yoder Blosser. She attended country school and then public schools in Goshen, Indiana, graduating from high school in 1935. Her parents were faithful Mennonites, and her father was a professor of biology at Goshen College for some years, but passed away when Sara was in her 20’s, much too soon. Sara moved to Chicago to work in her aunt’s restaurant, The Singing Kettle, and later worked as secretary to the pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church, a large parish in downtown Chicago. She was a young woman in a big city, and fell into several wonderful jobs with mentors who watched out for her. She sang in the choir, and that’s where she met her future husband. On December 31, 1939 she was united in marriage to Eugene Randall Melson (Gene) at their beloved Fourth Church, and they began their long loving life together that spanned almost 60 years.

In March 1942, the family moved from Downers Grove, Illinois to Kansas City, Missouri and in October, 1943, when Gene accepted a commission in the Navy, the family moved to Indianola, Iowa. Gene was away at war in the Pacific for three years. Difficult times indeed, but Sara managed to raise her toddlers with the help of Gene’s parents, and wrote letters every day to her husband with news of the little ones, keeping Gene feeling connected and loved. She attended Simpson College during this time, and received voice training there as well.

When Gene returned from the war in 1946, they lived in Jefferson, Iowa, where they raised their seven children and lived a full, active life in the community for over 30 years. Sara was active in community affairs and church work all her life, but her first love and consideration was for her family. Music was an important part of her life, as she directed young people’s choirs, sang at the First United Methodist Church and with civic groups. She had a lovely, warm alto voice, and was a wonderful musician. She and Gene raised the family surrounded with good music, parental love and guidance. Besides music, her interests were in reading, sewing and hand work, birds and nature, writing to friends and keeping a journal, and enjoying people wherever she went. She was active as a Rotary Ann, and compiled and published a Rotary cookbook from 53 clubs in District 600 for the benefit of the Rotary Foundation. She was a Paul Harris Fellow. Sara was also a member of the women’s philanthropic organization P.E.O., joining in 1944.

After tragically losing their youngest child to an unexpected illness in 1973, Gene gradually retired his law practice and Sara and Gene moved to Poulsbo, Washington to be closer to most of their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed many years together, until Gene’s passing in 1998. Sara continued her love of life and family for another 18 years. Her faith in God was her constant companion. She was most recently a member of Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church in Bremerton, Washington, and so loved that community and traditional music program. She lived fully, with Christian morals, a generous spirit, and an open mind to all people. What a gracious gift she was to her family and all who knew her.

Sara was predeceased by her husband Gene, their daughter Christine (Tina), as well as her sibship of three brothers and one sister.

Sara is survived by six children and their progeny: Carrie Lou Hollenbeck (David) of Port Orchard, WA; Stephen John ‘Steve’ Melson, MD (Kathleen) of Seattle, WA; Sara Jean ‘Sally’ Shuster (John) of Port Orchard, WA; Celia Anne ‘Ces’ Brunow (John) of Jefferson, IA; Eugene Randall ‘Gene/Randy’ Melson, Jr. (Yoko) of Southworth, WA; Cynthia Jane ‘Cindy’ Harris (David) of Bremerton, WA. Nine grandchildren: Christopher Melson (Shelby Harris), Kirkland, WA; Annie Melson, Seattle, WA; Nathaniel Crosswhite, Boston, MA; Kellen Crosswhite, Federal Way, WA; Jessica Holloway (Drew), Bellevue, WA; Jacob Brunow (Sammy), Richmond, VA; Sara Brunow (Adam Spencer), Houston, TX; Elizabeth Borgen (Casey), Seattle, WA; Philip Melson, Seattle, WA; and three step-grandchildren: Chris Harris (Anna), Poulsbo, WA; Marcy Harris (Kevin), Vancouver, WA; Lisa Perez (Anthony), Temecula, CA; ten great-grandchildren and eleven step great-grandchildren; and finally, one step great-great grandchild! All will lovingly remember her as ‘Grandma Sara’.

Celebrations of Sara’s life will be held in small gatherings in both Washington and Iowa, with interment of ashes in Jefferson, Iowa as the family gathers there this summer. Arrangements handled in Washington by Lewis Chapel (www.lewischapel.com) followed by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Condolences to the family or memorial gifts in Sara’s name are welcome and can be sent c/o Lewis Chapel, 5303 Kitsap Way, Bremerton, WA 98312.
