Victoria MacDonald

Victoria Maude MacDonald, 70, of Jefferson and formerly of Scranton, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Regency Park Nursing Home in Jefferson.

Born August 3, 1946 in Jefferson, Iowa, Vicki, as she was known to most, was the daughter of Burnell “B.A.” and Shirley (Seward) MacDonald. She grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton Consolidated Schools in 1964. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in Wayne, Neb. in 1967 and then earned her master’s degree in psychology from the University of Iowa in 1968.  

Vicki worked in Des Moines as a social worker for several years. She was a member of the Scranton United Methodist Church. Vicki enjoyed playing bingo and games, animals, going for rides in her Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 and spending time with her family. She had a strong faith, and she loved Elvis Presley music and the many family vacations the MacDonalds took over the years.

Vicki is survived by her daughter, Dendra Lee of Norwalk; four grandchildren: Chase, Sonny, Jaron and Summer; two brothers, Stacy MacDonald (Janis)  and Craig MacDonald (Susanne) all of Scranton; a niece, Kristi Schroeder (Greg) of Arcadia, Iowa; two nephews, Shawn MacDonald (Cheryl) of Valley, Neb. and Todd Arnold (Lynette) of Omaha, Neb.; and several great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vicki was preceded in death by her parents and her identical twin sister, Val MacDonald.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Organist for the service was Lula Garnes. Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to the service. Casket bearers were Shawn MacDonald, Nathan MacDonald, Todd Arnold, Greg Schroeder, Tyler Schroeder and Justin Schroeder.  Burial was in the Scranton Township Cemetery.

Norman Gore

Norman Gore, 98, of Jefferson, died Sunday, January 22, 2017.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 27 at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson with Rev. Gordon Moen officiating. “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and “Satin Doll” were played by pianist, Keri Brooker. Interment was at the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson with graveside military rites given by the Iowa Army Honor Guard.

Norman Douglas Gore was born March 5,1918 in Jefferson, Iowa to Phleete and Byrde (Judy) Gore. He attended Jefferson schools until his high school graduation in 1936. He studied photography at the Kodak Institute in Rochester, N.Y.

Norman enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He became an aerial photo gunner, flying over the Himalayan Mountains to photograph and aid in mapping where allied bombs could be dropped to aid the Chinese in their fight against Japan. He was part of the India-Burma, Central Burma and China campaigns, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the American Defense Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with three Bronze stars.

After the war, he lived in Chicago for many years where he was a portrait and advertising photographer. He married in 1969. During his wife’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, they relocated to Delavan, Wisconsin. After her death, he returned to Jefferson, where he lived until 2011 when he moved to Illahee Hills in Urbandale. He came to Jefferson in June of 2016, living at the Regency Park Nursing Home until his passing on January 22, 2017.

His later years were marked by friendships old and new in Jefferson and at Lake Robbins Ballroom, where he had a community of friends who loved Big Band music and dancing as much as he did.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Warren Y. Gore of St. Paul, Minn. He is survived by his dancing partner and long-time companion, Evelyn Shafer; his sister, Virginia Shelton of Greeley, Colo.; several nieces and nephews; as well as many good friends and neighbors from across the years.

Robert Safley

Robert Safley, 92, of Jefferson, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Regency Park Nursing and Rehab Center, Jefferson, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at Central Christian Church in Jefferson with Rev. Sheldon Henderson officiating. Honorary bearers were Sarah Borgeson, Elizabeth Pierce, Mary Hinton, Jeff Safley, Mark Safley, Andrea Kemble, Matt Safley and Erin Drew. Casket bearers were Alan Borgeson, Stanton Safley, Jacob Safley, Mike Safley, Bill Frederick, John Freeman and Lindsey Larson. “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” were sung by Gary Haupert accompanied by Deb Hoskins on the piano. “All Good Gifts,” recorded music by Peg Raney, was also played. Interment was in Franklin Township Cemetery, Greene County, Iowa.

Bob was born November 26, 1924 on a farm south of Jefferson, Iowa to Floyd and Clara (Kinyon) Safley.  He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942.

Bob was united in marriage to Frances Schilling on September 8, 1946. They became the parents of Bobby, Bill, Tom and Ann. Bob, Fran and the children lived and worked on their farm southeast of Cooper, Iowa. They planted row crops and raised livestock. Bob so enjoyed his lifelong career of farming in Greene County. In 1976, Bob and Fran moved into Jefferson and Bob continued to work on the farm for many years to come.

He enjoyed his family and friends and doing activities like bowling, playing cards, playing pool and watching football on television. He was an avid golfer and had the good luck of getting a hole-in-one on the Jefferson golf course. Through the years, Bob and Fran danced to the Big Band sounds of many fine orchestras. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. He belonged to B.P.O E. Lodge #2306.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters: twins, Myron and Byron, Duane, Florence, Irene, Ethelmae and Velma.

He survived by his wife, Frances Safley of Jefferson; three sons: Bob (Connie) Safley of Linden, Bill (Holli) Safley of Peterson, Iowa and Tom (Lorna) Safley of Jefferson; a daughter, Ann (Alan) Frederick of Jefferson; 12 grandchildren: Mike Safley, Jeff Safley, Mark Safley, Andrea Kemble, Matt Safley, Erin Drew, Jacob Safley, Stanton Safley, Sarah Borgeson, Liz Pierce, Mary Hinton and Bill Frederick; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Roberta Russell

Roberta Jane Russell, daughter of James Edward Van Cleave and Fairy Rose Marie Clark Van Cleave, was born August 20, 1927 on her parents’ farm near Yale, Iowa and died January 29, 2017 at Genesis Senior Living in Des Moines. Roberta was 89 years, 5 months and 9 days old. Roberta’s funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 2 at  Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Pastor Larry Monthei of Hope United Methodist, Cooper provided words of comfort. Her honorary casket bearers were Jay Elliott, Amanda Heilman, Brian Cook, Carrie Cook, Molly Brown, Austin Brown, Anne York, Ryan Humpal, Ashley Kelly and Ranae Fallis. Active casket bearers were Kenneth Russell, Dan Russell, Adam Kelly, James Russell, Nathan Heilman and Andy Russell. Recorded music was “Legend Of The Dog Wood Tree,” “Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden.” Burial was in Highland Township Cemetery in Bayard. Following the service at the cemetery, everyone was invited to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Jamaica Community Center, served by the Jamaica woman.

Roberta attended Country School in Cass and Victory Township then graduated from Yale High School. Following her school days, she went into civil service work, assigned soon after to Wright-Patterson Field in Ohio. On October 23, 1946, she married Jack Russell in Dayton, Ohio. They were blessed with three sons: James, Kenneth and Danny. The family made their home in various areas including Denver, Colo., Bayard, Yale and Jamaica.  

Roberta was very involved in the Jamaica community. She never knew a stranger and had many friends. Roberta was an ambitious lady, having worked for Garst Seed Company, Meadow Gold Products in Perry, Franklin Manufacturing, cleaned for others and mowed lawns for the city of Jamaica. Most folks will remember the 25 years she drove a bus for YJB Schools and was a first responder for Jamaica for many years. Roberta will also be remembered for her love of genealogy and she enjoyed her membership in the Genealogical Society. She enjoyed quilting and yard work, refinish furniture, but her first love was her family. Roberta was blessed with a large extended family and she looked forward to each and every gathering.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack in 1982; stillborn daughter, Katherine; son, Jim Russell; sisters, Delores Helle and husband, LeRoy and Barbara Kipp; niece, Sara Helle; nephews, Eric Helle and Tom Van Cleave; and grandson-in-law, Rex Fallis.

Roberta’s memory will be cherished by her sons, Kenneth Russell (Deanna) of Storm Lake and Dan Russell (Kellie) of Truesdale, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Christyne Russell Hellebuyck (Al) of Drexel, Mo.; her beloved grandchildren: Jay Elliott, Carrie Cook (Brian), Amanda Heilman (Natha),  Molly Brown (Austin), Adam Kelly (Ashley), James Russell, Anne York, Ryan Humpal, Ranae Fallis and Andy Russell; great-grandchildren: Derek, Kayli, Ethan, Adeline, Nolan, Reis, Rylee, Alexander, Wyatt, Shawn, Dylan, Kayla, Nicholas, Kiersten, Ayden, Lily, Ian, Brooklyn, Skylar and Brayden; brother, Lee Van Cleave (Frances) of Perry; brother-in-law, Dick Kipp of Yale; many cousins, nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Mark Delp

Mark Allen Delp, son of Jacob Delp and Carolyn Rose Lami Delp, was born October 2, 1962 in Jefferson, Iowa. Mark died unexpectedly January 31, 2017 near his home in Dawson, Iowa. He was 54 years, 3 months and 29 days old.

Funeral services for Mark were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4 at Hastings Funeral Home, Jefferson. Rev. Steve Ransom of the United Methodist Church, Grand Junction, provided the words of comfort. Mark’s casket bearers were Tyler Delp, Alan Mundt, Jake Mundt, James Delp, John Delp and David Delp. Recorded music selections were “In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah McLachlan and “The Rose” by Bette Middler. Interment was in the Junction Township Cemetery, Grand Junction. A time of lunch and fellowship was held at the new Grand Junction Community Center following the service at the cemetery.

Mark grew up on a farm outside of Grand Junction. He graduated from East Greene High School in 1981. He was a good worker and started at Ace Hardware at a young age. Mark and Susie Beeler were parents of a son, Tyler, and they made their home on an acreage near Squirrel Hollow. Mark had a long career with Tyson in Perry until his health failed a year ago. Mark and Brenda Nicholaisen were blessed with a daughter, Brook. Mark married Joann Woodard and the family was happy with the arrival of Donovin. They made their home in Dawson. Mark’s greatest love and joy was his family. They spent many hours together.  

Mark was a sports fan, the Eagles and Hawkeyes were his favorite teams. He also enjoyed Camaros, classic rock music and movies. Mark purchased many movies which he loved to share with his children.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Carolyn and his brother, Steve. Mark is survived by his children: Tyler A. Delp of Dawson, Brook Pettry (Benjamin Cuellar) of Marshalltown and Donovin Delp of Dawson; grandson, Noe Cuellar; brothers, Jim Delp (Terri) of Grand Junction, John Delp of Des Moines and David Delp (Toni) of Carrol; sisters, Gail Delp and Sharon Delp both of Perry and Joann Gooding (Larry) of Ankeny; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Don McCormick

Don Andrew McCormick, the son of Michael and Mattie (Andrews) McCormick, was born on October 9, 1921 in a farm house four miles west of Churdan, Iowa (just North of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church). Don departed this life February 1, 2017 at Lakeside Village in Panora, Iowa. He lived his life to the age of 95 years, 3 months and 22 days.

Don was raised in the Churdan area mostly on a farm 2 ¼ miles SE of Churdan with his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Don attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Churdan High School in 1939. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and spent six months at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station near Chicago and three years as a Machinist Mate 1st Class aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Quick. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean 36 times from Brooklyn, N.Y. or Boston Navy Yards.

Father John Hausman, priest at Churdan Catholic Church (and Sylvia’s uncle), introduced Don to Sylvia Ann Hausman. On August 6, 1943, they were united in marriage at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. where Don was stationed while in the Navy.

Don was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 7, 1945. He and Sylvia lived and farmed on Don’s parents’ farm near Churdan where they raised their seven children. In 1972, they bought Harry Richard’s farm and then in 1975, after his parents were deceased, they bought the “home” farm. In the fall of 1995 they moved off the farm to Churdan. Sylvia preceded Don in death on December 28, 2011 after 68 years of marriage. Don resided in Churdan until January 2013 when he became a resident at the Gardens Assisted Living in Jefferson for 3 ½ years.  In August 2016, he moved to Panora.

Don was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan where he served as a Trustee for several years. He was a member of the American Legion and Lions Club. He also worked several years at the Greene County ASC Office.

Sylvia and Don spent 22 years wintering in McAllen, Texas where they enjoyed playing cards, dancing and playing bingo. Don also enjoyed golfing and wood working.

Don is survived by his seven children: Don (Carol) of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Pat Thomas of Omaha, Neb., Gary (Mary) of Churdan, Rich (Carolyn) of Winterset, Dave (Candy) of Omaha, Kathy Welch (Alan) of Iowa City and Melinda Pick (Mike) of Ankeny; 24 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Rex; three sisters, Zola, Darlene and Shirley; and son-in-law, Jack.

A visitation was held Friday, February 3, 2017 at 4 p.m. with the Rosary at 6:15 p.m. followed by the Vigil at St. Columbkille Church in Churdan. Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 4 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Musical selections at the service were rendered by Greg Carey and the church choir and accompanied by organist Lois Last. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Churdan American Legion. Serving as casket bearers were his grandsons: Martin McCormick, Brad Thomas, Jason Thomas, Todd Thomas, John McCormick, Mike McCormick, Ryan McCormick, Matt Welch and Rob Pick.

J Gilbert Benedict

J Gilbert Benedict, 84, of Golden, Colorado, passed away, Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Collier Hospice in Lakewood, Colorado.

J was born August 16, 1932 in Jefferson, Iowa to Paul and Madeline (Coler) Benedict. J attended Jefferson High School where he was class valedictorian, played Varsity Football and was an accomplished flutist. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska, in 1954. Following college, J married his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Wright and they moved to Southern California where J served as a United States Naval Officer from 1954 to 1957. Following his honorable discharge, he received his Ph.D. from UCLA.

J, Carol and their daughter Becky moved to Colorado in 1961. They lived for a short time in Littleton, where their second daughter, Jenny was born, and then built their home on Lookout Mountain in 1963.  Lookout Mountain and the surrounding community has been a part of J and Carol’s life ever since.  He loved skiing, tennis and golf, and when he wasn’t doing something outside, he could be found in the basement doing wood working, or outside in the garage tinkering on a car. J enjoyed gardening in the summer and took breaks by going to Mount Vernon Country Club for a swim, enjoying his neighbors and friends in the backyard, or playing long tournaments of cribbage and backgammon with his son in-law, Patrick. Every year, the family would find their way down to Fort Myers Beach, Florida for several weeks of vacation at Christmas time.

J loved being a psychologist, and practiced his entire adult life. He began his practice as a child psychologist on staff at Fort Logan Mental Health Center, where he helped open the Children’s Division.  He then developed his private practice working with families and children.  As his practice grew, he provided psychological services for North Metro Community Services and Platte River Industries, working with the developmentally disabled population. He was the consulting psychologist for Forest Heights Lodge, a treatment center for emotionally disturbed boys, for 45 years. He was also an expert witness for families struggling through custody disputes. J was also involved as a psychologist at the state level, where he was a member, and held several offices for the Colorado Psychology Association, including President. J was a member and on several committees and editor for the American Psychological Association, and he was awarded the National Academy of Sciences Medal of Achievement.

J is survived by his wife, Carol Wright Benedict and their two daughters, Becky Ann Benedict and Jennifer Benedict-Johnson; his grandchildren: Jaryd P. Benedict, Ethan B. Johnson and Morgan B. Benedict; his sister, Diann Windle, of Quincy, Calif.; his niece and his nephew, Kylie Althouse Schroeder and Matt Althouse; his great niece and great nephews: Ben Althouse, Bridget Althouse Webster, David Althouse, Jacob Althouse and Dominic Sonsini. J was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Irving Benedict and Madeline Coler Benedict.

J was an active member of Rockland Community Church since moving to the mountains, and treasured his time with the choir. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Rockland Community Church, 17 S. Mt. Vernon Country Club Road, Golden, CO 80401, with retired Pastor Ken Williams conducting the service. Memorials may be made to Forest Heights Lodge, PO Box 789, Evergreen, CO 80439.

Eva Mullins

Eva Eloise Mullins, 92, of Jefferson, formerly of Paton, died Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Regency Park. A funeral service was held Wednesday, February 8 at Salem United Methodist Church in Paton with Rev. David Arulnathan of the Salem United Methodist Church, Paton officiating. Honorary bearers were Eli Black and Joe Davis. Casket bearers were Colin Black, Vernon Bauer, Vance Bauer, Philip Bauer, Jim Price and Derwood Mullins. Congregational hymns “The Old Rugged Cross” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” were accompanied by Danille Curtis. Interment was at Dawson Township Cemetery in Paton.

Eva Eloise Scott and her twin brother, Elijah, were born September 17, 1924 in Ontario, Iowa. Her parents were Emmett Benjamin Scott and Florence Belle (Price) Scott. Her dad’s job with the railroad moved them from Ontario to Clinton, Iowa for a short time, then to Jefferson where the family remained. A few years after the death of Eva’s mother in December 1934, she moved in with Clark and Nettie Hays to continue her schooling and help in their home. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Lewis Benjamin Mullins on November 17, 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. They made their home on the farm in Dawson Township near Paton. Their daughter, Corinne Eloise, was born on August 29, 1950.

Eva belonged to the UMW at Paton Methodist Church and Stitch and Chat, a neighborhood club. She also enjoyed her membership and meetings of the Greene County Historical Society.

She enjoyed gardening and tending to the house yard. She kept busy with her chicken chores and helping with the other livestock and field work as was needed. She made many meals and lunches for those in the field. She sewed many of her own clothes and Corinne’s, including Corinne’s wedding gown. She did other needle work and crafts. One project she was pleased with was a “class quilt” she assembled with blocks from each of her classmates that she pieced together and had machine quilted.

The family took many Sunday drives to state parks and historical places and to visit family. Eva moved to the Regency Park nursing home in September 2011. She passed away there on February 4, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lewis, on February 5, 2006; her brothers: Delbert, Elmer and Elijah; brothers-in-law, Leslie Mullins and Verlin Bauer; sisters-in-law, Florence Scott and Elva Mullins; and son-in-law, Vernon Brancroft, on December 22, 2016.

Eva is survived by her daughter, Corinne Bancroft; sisters-in-law, Hortense Scott of Calif. and Vera Bauer of Gowrie, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Duane Larson

Duane Larson, 88, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. Rev. Gordon Moen of First Presbyterian Church and Pastor Larry Monthei of Hope United Methodist Parish, Cooper officiated. Honorary bearers were Jami Szwejk, Leslie Welter, Levi Larson, Lakota Larson, Haily Larson and Autumn Larson. Casket bearers were Christopher Dela Pole, Grant Custer, Mitchell Larson, Reed Larson, Jeff Szwejk and Nick Welter. The music was “How Great Thou Art” and “Home On The Range” with soloist, Kenny Monthei accompanied by pianist, Cheryl Nailor. Interment was at Franklin Township Cemetery, Greene County, Iowa.

Duane Harold Larson was born October 31, 1928 on a farm on the Hamilton and Boone County Line, near  Stratford, Iowa. He was the oldest son of Elsie (Patterson) and Lawrence Larson. Duane’s schooling began at country school, then starting with the third grade, he attended school in Boxholm. The family moved to Greene County in 1942. Duane graduated from Cooper High School in 1946.

On January 29, 1950, Duane was united in marriage to Betty Jeanne Schilling at the Methodist Church in Jefferson. They made their home on a family farm in Franklin Township, Greene County, where they raised their four children, and were engaged in production agriculture which included corn, soybeans, hay, hogs and cattle feeding. From 1967 to 1971, Betty and Duane participated in an American/Japanese agricultural program which linked them to four young Japanese men, all students of Agriculture, who lived with the Larson family for nearly one year each. In later years, Betty and Duane visited all four men and their families in their respective homes in Japan. To this day, the Larsons remain in contact with Shigenobu Miyauchi of Kochi-Ken, Japan.   

Duane refereed high school and semi-pro basketball throughout the state of Iowa for eleven years. He was an assistant Greene County 4-H leader for four years and worked on the Greene County Fair Board for many years.

As a member of the Greene County Farm Bureau, Duane served on the young member committee, and on the Greene County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, where he was an officer in all capacities of the board, and was the county FB voting delegate for a three-year term. For 23 years, Duane served on the Cal-Car Farm Service Board and was president of that board for five years.  From 1974 – 1976, Duane served on the state Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service committee, and was chairman for one year.

Duane was a member of the Methodist Church Administrative Board for three years. For nineteen years he worked for the Greene County Assessor’s Examining Board and was elected to serve as 3rd District County Supervisor from 2001 to 2006.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Eldon and Marvin “Mike.” He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children: Lin Pole (John) of Saint Paul Park, Minn., Laine Custer (Tom), Lindsey Larson (Debra) and Loel Larson (Sandy) all of Jefferson; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Olive Umbaugh, 98, of Ankeny, formerly of Jefferson, died Friday, February 3, 2017.

A service of remembrance was held Monday, February 6 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson with Rev. Sheldon Henderson of Central Christian Church officiating. The musical selection were “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Because He Lives.” Soloist, Gary Haupert, was accompanied by Danille Curtis. Honorary bearers were Hilary Coffman, Leslie Brittain, Katie Umbaugh, Laura Umbaugh, Lily Dignan, Robbie Culp, Judith Hillman and Jim Schleisman. Casket bearers were Don Umbaugh, Jeremy Brittain, Bob Culp, Kevin Curp, Matt Coffman and Terry Blackburn. Interment was at Scranton Township Cemetery in Scranton.

Olive Mildred Blackburn Umbaugh was born December 10, 1918 on a farm west of Grand Junction, Iowa, to George S. Blackburn and Geneva (Terrill) Blackburn. She graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1937 and attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa from 1937 to 1939. Olive began her 33 year elementary teaching career at Jackson Township #2 school in 1939, where she taught for 1 year. Olive taught in Dana from 1940 to 1942, Bagley from 1942 to 1943, and Scranton from 1943 to 1946.

Olive was married to Glen R. Umbaugh on November 18, 1945 at the Grand Junction Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction. Daughter, Mary Eileen Umbaugh, was born March 18, 1947 in Scranton, where Glen was barbering and Olive was teaching. Olive continued to raise a young family while Glen was in the military, with Frank Samuel Umbaugh born in Salina, Kansas, on April 15, 1949. Olive and Glen then returned to Iowa, at first living on the farm south of Grand Junction, where Peter King was born on November 26, 1950, then moved to Plover, Iowa. Glen barbered and Olive sold advertising for a little newspaper Glen also ran off of a mimeograph machine. The Umbaugh’s next move was to Cherokee, Iowa for Glen’s work in another barber shop.

In August, 1954 Olive, Glen and family moved to their first house on Cedar Street in Jefferson accompanied by the birth of Glen Umbaugh II. Olive resumed her teaching career in 1956 for the Cooper school system from 1956 to 1959. In 1957, Olive and family moved to the home on Brackett Street.

Olive then endured many blustery winter days on the playgrounds of the Scranton schoolhouse, teaching there from 1959 to 1964. In 1964, Olive began teaching 5th grade in Jefferson public schools. As teaching requirements were increased, Olive attended Drake University classes at night and on weekends, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. When the elementary schoolrooms were moved to Cooper, Olive and her lifelong friends made the sojourns together to Cooper again, until that building was closed in 1981.

Olive was widowed in 1973. She retired from teaching from the Jefferson public school system in 1982. Prior to, and during her retirement, Olive enjoyed traveling around the country, visiting her grown children in Georgia, Tennessee, California, or wherever her kids were living. She was also a master bridge player, and spent much of her time in retirement playing in and hosting several bridge clubs, visiting with her family members and tremendous friends in Jefferson and around the country.  Olive moved to the Vintage Hills assisted living facility in Ankeny in August, 2013.

Preceding Olive in death were her parents, George and Geneva Blackburn; husband, Glen Umbaugh; brothers, George T. (Bernice) Blackburn and Eugene (Edna) Blackburn; and daughter, Mary Umbaugh of Hanford, Calif. Survivors include her brother, Allen (Karen) of Grand Junction; sons, Frank (Georgia) of Mirabile, Mo., Peter (Ann) of Avondale Estates, Ga. and Glen (Deborah) of Alleman, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews; and a host of dear lifelong friends.

Rita Erickson, the daughter of Harvey and Fern (Crandell) Davis, was born August 11, 1923 in Grand Junction, Iowa, and departed this life February 10, 2017 at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. Rita lived her life to the age of 93 years, 5 months and 19 days.

Rita grew up and attended school in Grand Junction. On May 17, 1943, Rita Davis was united in marriage to Harvey Charles Erickson in Omaha, Nebraska. Two sons, Jerry and George, were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed for many years in the Paton area until turning the farm operations over to their sons. They continued to live on the Century family farm and Charles worked in Jefferson. Charles passed away March 8, 1982. Rita lived on the family farm for a total of 55 years until December of 2003 when she became a resident of Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care. She had been a resident for 13 years at the time of her death.

Rita devoted her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. When her sons were young, Rita was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed music but is remembered mostly for her cooking, especially by her grandchildren.

Rita is survived by her two sons, Jerry and George (Peggy) all of Paton; six grandchildren: Donnie, Nick, Scott, John, Rhonda Kruse and Kristine Menz; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter-in-law, Irene.

A prayer service was held Monday, February 13, 2017 at the Brown Funeral Home in Jefferson with Rev. James Barnett officiating. A private burial by her family was held on Tuesday, February 14 at the Paton Township Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were her grandchildren.

Betty Tilley

Betty L. Tilley, the daughter of Fred Arthur and Helen (Grant) Fox, was born December 29, 1937 in Paton, Iowa and departed this life February 6, 2017 at the Long Term Care in the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. Betty lived her life to the age of 79 years, 1 month and 7 days.

Betty’s mother died of a brain tumor when she was ten years old. Betty and her older brother, James, grew up in Paton. Betty attended and graduated from Paton High School in 1955. She was very active during her school years. Betty was a member of the Paton Happy Hustlers’ 4-H club, played the drums in the band, was a member of the Girls Glee Club and was in mixed chorus. She was also the girls’ basketball manager. In the summer of 1954, Betty worked as a waitress at Deke’s Café in Paton and again after her graduation the next summer. While working at the café, she met her future husband, Lawrence. Betty and Lawrence were married June 17, 1956 at Salem United Methodist Church in Paton. Two children, Mark and Debra, were born to this union.

After their marriage, they made their home across the road from Lawrence’s parents, Virgil and Hattie Tilley. In the fall of 1957, Lawrence had to report to the Army. During the time Lawrence was in boot camp, Betty lived with her father in Paton and worked at the Café. After boot camp, Betty was able to join Lawrence and they lived at Fort Smith, Arkansas and later at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. In 1958, Lawrence received an early discharge because his father needed help getting the crops out and they moved back to Churdan. In 1964, they moved to a farm west of Churdan which they rented and farmed until 1982. They then rented and moved to a farm southwest of Paton. They retired in 2001 and moved to a home in Churdan. Betty enjoyed sewing and was interested in genealogy. In August of 2013, due to failing health, Betty became a resident of Regency Park Care Center in Jefferson and Lawrence would visit her every day. In December of 2015, Lawrence had health problems and joined Betty in the care center. Lawrence passed away in January of 2016.

Betty is survived by her son, Mark (Melinda) of Jefferson and their children, Brandon of Iowa City and Emma of Ames; and daughter, Debra Bauer (Warren) of Fort Dodge and their daughters, Sarah Kelly (Joel) of Omaha and Nicole Oswald (Steven) of Manson and their children, Ella and Kenton. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, husband and brother.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at United Methodist Church in Churdan with Rev. David Arulnathan officiating. Following the service, her remains were cremated and burial with Lawrence’s remains will take place at a later date in the Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan. Musical selections “In the Garden,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace” were sung by the congregation and accompanied by organist, Janice Tilley. Serving as casket bearers were Brandon Tilley, Joel Kelly, Steven Oswald, Dennis Tilley, David Tilley and Doug Sorenson. Honorary casket bearers were Emma Tilley, Sarah Kelly, Nicole Oswald and Kay Bates.

Lois Woodard

Lois Theresa Woodard, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and WWII veteran passed away February 6, 2017 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines.

Lois was born August 7, 1923 to Frank and Theresa (Tressie) Hobbs of Quinlan, Okla. She graduated from Waynoka, Oklahoma High School in 1941. In 1943 she joined the US Navy as a member of the Waves where she did basic training in New York City, then on to Ohio for coding training and finally to naval air station in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was in Daytona Beach where she met her husband of 58 years Russell Woodard. They were married in Medicine Lodge, Kan. on September 16, 1946. Russ worked for the CNW Railroad at the time so for the first couple of years they lived in Blair, Neb. and also near an Indian Reservation in N.D. before settling in Verdigre, Neb. where they were blessed with two daughters, Barbara and Beth. In 1965 the family moved to Jefferson, Iowa and settled in the house near Kelso Park for 50 years.

Lois worked for Greene County Hospital for 24 years as a housekeeper, physical therapy aide and also a long term nurse’s aide. She as an active member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed coffee dates with past co-workers, congregate meals with friends and helping out her friends with rides to various functions, meals, and doctor appointments. She was an avid gardener and catered to the birds, squirrels and the occasional deer or fox that wandered into their yard. She loved her family very much and was very proud of each one of the them.

Those left to remember her love and grace include her daughter, Beth Wright of Pleasant Hill; son-in law, Gary Horacek; sister-in-law, Virginia Welch of Denver; brother-in-law, Jim Woodard (Kay) Blair; her grandchildren: Melinda Long (Steve) of Waukee, Melissa Huisman of Pleasant Hill, Jessica Hodson (Daniel) of Winterset and Pamela Thomas (Les) of Denver, Colo.; step grand-children: Denise Tomas (Raheem) Omaha, Neb., Nick Horacek (April) of Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was also known as Granny to her great-grandchildren: Allan Wright (fiance Genna Humble), Nate Huisman, Madison Hodson, Kelcey Huisman, Megan Hodson, Nick Huisman, Abby Sherwood, Carson Huisman, Alexis Long, Alexander Long and Aaron Thomas; step great-grandchildren: Calon Horacek (Brandi), Cahron Tomas and Ci’Leayah Tomas; and step great-great-grandchildren: Shae’Lynn Horacek and Caeden Horacek.

Proceeding Lois in death were her parents, Frank and Theresa Hobbs; brothers: John, James and Forrest Hobbs; daughter, Barbara Horacek; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were arranged by Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson and held at United Methodist Church. Burial was at Blair Cemetery in Blair, Neb.

Norma Ferguson

Norma Ferguson, 95, of Jefferson, died Sunday, February 12, 2017.

A graveside services of remembrance was held Wednesday, February 15 at the Jefferson Cemetery with Rev. Sheldon Henderson of Central Christian Church, Jefferson officiating. Casket bearers were Jason Todd Ferguson, Chad Ferguson, Brad Ferguson, Alan Ferguson, Tessa Weir, Eric Winger, Adam Winger and Nicole Uebel. The musical selection were “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Larry Dowd was the soloist. Interment was at Jefferson Cemetery.

Norma Lavon Woodhouse was born August 29, 1921 to Sam and Mable Woodhouse in Scranton, Iowa. Norma was the fourth of five girls. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1938. Norma married the love of her life, Merle D. Ferguson, of Dana, Iowa on January 9, 1946. Together they had three children: Ronald, Richard and Nancy. Norma spent her life raising her children, taking care of her husband, and working various jobs including a tenure as Deputy Sheriff that she loved to tell stories of.

Norma was a talented painter and enjoyed participating in many local clubs. She was a Charter Member of Does, in its 50th year and served as President in 1973. She was a member of Central Christian Church. She was a loving person who spread joy to those around her.

After her husband died in 2004, Norma lived on her own until she was 94 and then lived at The Gardens and then Regency Park in Jefferson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters: Leah Fengel of Jefferson, Gwen Mooseberg of Peoria, Ill. and Doris Dunlop of Jefferson; and two infant brothers.

She is survived by her three children: Ronald (Dru) Ferguson of Amarillo, Texas, Richard (Klarice) Ferguson of Jamaica, Iowa and Nancy (Thomas) Winger of Jefferson; sister, Donna (John) Buckley of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

JoAnne Rosetta Grow, daughter of Joseph George Miller and Pearl Cecilia Kelting Miller, was born March 20, 1931 in Grand Junction, Iowa and died February 2, 2017 at Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie, Georgia. JoAnne was 85 years old, 10 months and 12 days.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Brigid Catholic Church, Grand Junction. The celebrant was Rev. Fr. Jeff Schliesman, lectors were Mark Paul Simons and Mark Miller. Chuck Schott was cantor. Joanne’s honorary bearers were Kevin Grow, Brian Grow (deceased), Dale Miller, Gayland Miller, Ralph Miller, Janice Bice, Eric Elston, Andrew Elston, Nicole Ahrens, Roy Sellers, Jeffrey Alex, Jason Alex, Kyle White, Gina White and Phil Lansing. Her casket bearers were Doug Kinney, Mark Miller, Steve Alex, Mark Paul Simons, Aaron Kinney and Bridgette Scott. Burial was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Grand Junction. Lunch was served by the St. Brigid Catholic Church Ladies at the Parish Hall.  

JoAnne attended St. Brigid Catholic Parochial School in Grand Junction and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1948. JoAnne met Donald Grow at a dance held at the Legion Hall in Grand Junction on Valentine’s Day. They were married April 28, 1956 at St. Brigid Catholic Church. The two had a deep and abiding love all of their married lives. JoAnne was a hard worker, tirelessly caring for Don and their six children. She not only was a busy homemaker, but she assisted Don at their auction house in town. JoAnne was known for her wonderful beef burgers which she sold at her lunch stand during the sales.  

Her family remembers her humble, generous presence, always being the caregiver. JoAnne had a deep love of God and abiding faith in her church. Her adoration of the Holy Mother was a deep part of her life and therefore, the Rosary was so important to her. JoAnne passed these wonderful traits on to her children. JoAnne and Don expressed their devotion to each other, never hesitating to demonstrate their love as a couple to each other and to their children. They found so much strength from their church and faith life. The family was very active at St. Brigid Church and later as members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moultrie.  

JoAnne and Don loved to dance, especially enjoying square dancing. They also bowled in a league. She collected tea pots and music boxes and liked to garden and cook.

JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents; her precious son, Brian in 2012; husband, Don in 2013; and her two brothers, Jerry Miller (Judy) and Kenneth Miller; brothers-in-law, Larry Bice and Gerald Brown. She will always be in the hearts of her surviving family: daughters, Kathy Alex (Steve) of Ottumwa, Becky Kinney (Doug) of Waukee, Deb Miller (Mark) of Perry and Denise Elston  (Roy Sellers) of Moultrie, Ga.; son, Kevin Grow of Perry; brothers, Dale Miller (Barbara) of Yale, Gayland Miller (Nancy) of Ames and Ralph Miller (Jana) of Grand Junction; sister, Janice Bice of Perry; sisters-in-law, Doris Brown of Rippey and Cleo Ison (Don) of Venice, Fla.. JoAnne is also survived by her dear grandchildren: Jeffrey Alex, Jason Alex, Gina Reed, Aaron Kinney, Kylie White, Bridget Scott, Mark Paul Simons, Nichole Ahrens, Eric Elston and Andrew Elston; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Alice Happe

Alice Happe was born February 4, 1933 in Iowa City, Iowa and passed from this life on February 13, 2017 at her home in Granger, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 84 years and 9 days.

Alice was raised in Jefferson by her mother, Alice James, and her grandparents, John and Margaret James. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1951. In the fall of 1951, Alice started training for her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. She received a two year degree in elementary education from Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls in 1953.

On September 28, 1954, Alice Thompson was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Happe at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. Ten children were born to this union. After their marriage, they lived in Scranton for a short time and then moved to a farm west of Churdan. In 1969, they moved to the family home in Churdan. Alice taught kindergarten, first, second and third grades at Paton-Churdan and Cedar Valley schools. In 1979, Alice received a B.A. degree from Drake University. Robert died in 1986 and Alice continued to live in Churdan. She retired from teaching in 1995. Due to Alice’s health, in 2015, she moved to a home in Granger to be close to her daughter, Merry Wilson.

Alice was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan and belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of the Retired Teachers of Greene County and also volunteered at the Churdan Library and as a Pink Lady at the Greene County Hospital. Alice enjoyed following her children and grand-children’s sports and other activities. She was a fan of tennis and would watch it on TV even if it meant staying up late at night. She enjoyed musicals, especially Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” her favorite. She liked to read and do word-find puzzles. She loved her dogs Megan and Happy, who were like two more children to her. Alice enjoyed traveling. Favorite travels included trips to Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Monaco, Hawaii, Ireland and Rome.

Alice is survived by her ten children: Steve of Centralia, Mo., Tony (Jacque) of Churdan, Tim (Laura) of Deltona, Fla., Teresa Brandt (Tom) of Altoona, Pam Stanhope (Steve) of Chandler, Ariz., Pat (Julie) of DeWitt, Scott (Sara) of Burleson, Texas, Annette Fahr (Randy) of Eldora, Sandy Ostendorf (Jeff) of Jefferson and Merry Wilson (Kevin) of Granger; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother; husband; two brothers, Leonard Rodgers and Bud Rodgers; sister, Maxine Smith; daughter-in-law, Dianna Happe and grandson-in-law, Jordan Murello.

Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Burial was made in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan. Musical selections were sung by the church choir with special selections by soloist, Mark Brandt and accompanied by organist Lois Last. A Rosary was prayed and a Vigil for the deceased was held Friday evening at the church. Serving as casket bearers were grandsons: Chuck Miles, Eric Happe, Victor Anderson, Isaac Anderson, Mark Brandt, Kevin Brandt, Trevin Happe, Jordan Fahr, Keaton Ostendorf, Jacob Wilson and Nicholas Wilson. Honorary bearers were granddaughters: Chris Matusek, Errica Schriber, Christina Anderson, Jennifer Murello, Devin Happe, Jenna Fahr and Tiffany Kemp. Family and friends were invited to a time of lunch and fellowship at the church following the graveside services.

Chris Hertel

Kay C. Henkes Hertel, 69, of Gilbert, Arizona passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at her home. In accordance with her desires, she will be cremated and interred at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Chris was born January 2, 1948 to Kermit and Frances Elmblad Henkes in Peoria, Illinois. She married to William Hertel on August 9, 1969.

Chris grew up in Jefferson, Iowa, where she went to high school, then graduated from Scranton, Iowa High School in 1966. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. and then transferred to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she graduated in January, 1971. She spent 22 years as a military spouse, living numerous places throughout the world, making homes for the family and supporting Bill in his career until she and Bill decided to settle in northern Virginia.

Chris worked for USAA Insurance for 18 years until she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006. In 2007, after successful treatment, she entered remission and she and Bill retired and moved to Gilbert, Arizona. She discovered in July 2016 that her cancer had returned. She went into immediate treatment and fought extremely hard. Everyone prayed that she would go back into remission.

Chris loved her dogs, Oscar and Chloe, she added them to the family soon after arriving in Arizona. She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement and the friends she had made over the years. She and Bill traveled a lot visiting places on her list in the US, Europe, Middle East, South America, SE Asia, Baltic Sea states, and Australia/New Zealand. Chris enjoyed playing mah jong and bunco weekly with her neighbors, and traveling and organizing other social activities with her many friends.

Chris was preceded in death by her parents, Kermit and Frances Henkes of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her in-laws, Charles and Shirley Hertel of Fairfield, Iowa; and her brother-law, Brad Forster of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Chris is survived by her husband, William of Gilbert, Ariz.; her son, Jason of Manassas, Va.; her sister, Ann Forster of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her sister-in-law, Janice Wilson (Larry) of Mesa, Ariz.; four nieces and nephews: Julie (Lee) Person, Wade (Sarah) Wilson, Kent Wilson and Kelly (Ken) Runyon.

Catherine H. “Katie” McCartney, 88, of Madrid, Iowa and former long-time Bagley, Iowa resident, died Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa.

A service of remembrance was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 23 at Bagley Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Monthei officiating. Carla Werre was the soloist, accompanied by Lula Garnes. The musical selections were “Amazing Grace,” “In The Garden” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Honorary bearers were Kelly Forburger, Kurt McCartney, Bob and Hazel Frederick, Wayne Taylor, Dean and Ruth Shiflet and Jim and Kathy King. Casket bearers were Kevin McCartney, Andrea Crabb, Dennis Crabb, Leslie Hanson, Travis Ketterer and Steffanie Elkin. Interment was in Dodge Township Cemetery in Guthrie County.

Catherine Hotaling was born February 5, 1929 in Kingston, N.Y., the daughter of Clifford and Altie Hotaling. She graduated from Walkill High School in New York and moved to Iowa to attend Central College in Pella. After graduation, she accepted a teaching job at Bagley High School, focusing on English and home economics classes. While working in Bagley, Katie met her husband of 63 years. Katie married George “Eddie” McCartney in a ceremony on June 12, 1954 in Walkill, N.Y. They made their home in Bagley, where they raised their two children, Linda and John.

While Katie was born in New York, Bagley was always her home. She volunteered throughout the community, especially at Bagley United Methodist Church and Bagley Library.

Katie enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, sewing, creating stained glass and working on other crafts. She was a family cornerstone, hosting countless family gatherings and welcoming all her nieces and nephews to Bagley for a week each summer as they grew up.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie McCartney of Bagley; daughter, Linda (Dave) Ketterer of Monticello, Ind.; son, John McCartney of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Travis Ketterer of Monticello; in-laws, Keith and Beverlee McCartney of Burke, Va. and Bruce and Rita Blecken of West Des Moines; and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Clifford and her sister-in-law, Mary Ann McCartney.

Mary Wuebker

Mary Lou Wuebker, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Baumhover) Sabus, was born April 26, 1929 in Churdan, Iowa and departed this life February 17, 2017 at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 87 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Mary graduated from high school in 1945. Mary received nursing training at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge and received her Registered Nursing license in 1948. She started her nursing career working at Greene County Hospital in Jefferson for twenty years.

On January 23, 1951, Mary Lou Sabus was united in marriage to Melvin Bernard Wuebker at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson. Five children were born to this union. Mary raised her family and continued to work at the hospital. In later years, Mary was Director of Nursing at the Jefferson Manor which is now Regency Park Care Center. Melvin and Mary enjoyed wintering in Yuma, Arizona and after Melvin’s death in 1993, Mary continued to spend her winters there until 2015. Mary had been a resident of the Regency Care Center since December of 2015.  

Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and donated her time helping with funeral dinners. When the Catholic Church had daily Mass, Mary would attend every morning and then go out with friends for coffee. She liked to read, watch tennis on TV, watch baseball on TV (but only when it was the World Series) and going out to eat and dancing. Mary was an outdoor person and enjoyed walking, riding her bicycle at her winter home and camping. Mary had a daily ritual - one beer (and one beer only) at 5 o’clock. She told people that being in your 60s was the time of your life.     

Mary is survived by her children: Cathy Springer (Jim) of Jefferson, Michael Wuebker of Lakeside, Calif., Marty Wuebker (Allyson) of Bellevue, Neb. and Sheila Bruhl (Cecil) of Eagle Grove; ten grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Sabus of Fallbrook, Calif. and Tony Sabus of Boise, Idaho; and two sisters, Suzanne Reinert of Lakewood, Colo. and Sharlene Cox of Canon City, Colo. Those who preceded her in death were her parents; husband; a daughter, Christy who died in an auto accident at the age of nineteen in 1970; two sisters and four brothers.

Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Burial was made in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson. A Rosary was prayed and a prayer service followed on Wednesday evening at the Brown Funeral Home in Jefferson. Casket bearers were Robert Hofbauer, Luke Wuebker, Jason Steenblock, Justin Springer, Cecil Bruhl and Jeff Wand. Honorary bearers were Jeremy Springer, Tiffany Springer Steenblock, Paul Wuebker, Brittany Wuebker Campbell, Reed Wuebker, Anna Sebastion Wilson, Robert Hofbauer and Heidi Hofbauer. Friends and family were invited to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Parish Center following the graveside service.

Assisting the family was the Brown Funeral Home, Churdan.

Vincent Monahan

Vincent “Vince” Monahan, the son of John and Katie (Collins) Monahan, was born April 16, 1922 in Churdan, Iowa and departed this life February 20, 2017 at Greene County Long Term Care Facility in Jefferson, Iowa. He lived a full life to the age of 94 years, 10 months and 4 days.

Vince attended country school in the Churdan area through the 8th grade and then went to work for the Fitzpatrick Brothers farming. On October 9, 1942, Vince enlisted in the Navy and served on the Lawrence Taylor ship. While in the Navy, Vince boxed and in later years trained guys in his home basement in Jefferson for Golden Gloves boxing. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in November of 1945.  

On April 23, 1946, Vincent was united in marriage to Dorothy Baynes in Jefferson. Five children were born to this union. After their marriage, they went to South Carolina where Vince worked on the Savannah River Project, an atom bomb plant. After returning to Jefferson, Vince and his father-in-law, Harold Baynes established and operated the Baynes & Monahan Plumbing & Heating for several years. He then worked as plumbing supervisor for Shriver Construction in Jefferson and later for L.A. Fulton & Sons in Des Moines. Vince and Dorothy were divorced in 1975, and in mid 1990 Vince moved back to Churdan. After his “quote” first retirement, he started helping his son-in-law, Royce Schulz with his plumbing and heating business well into Vince’s late 80s..

Vincent was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan. Vince was an avid gardener with a large garden next to his house in Churdan and another in the country. He was known for his salsa and sauerkraut. He liked to play cards with all his friends and take fishing trips with his sons and grandsons. He had a trailer at Spirit Lake where he would take his grandkids. Most of all, his children and grandchildren were of great pride to him. Vince left Churdan in 2014 and moved to The Gardens Assisted Living Apartments in Jefferson and then moved to Long Term in 2016.

Vince is survived by four children: Shelley (Royce) Schulz of Scranton, Maria (Jim) Anderson of Ankeny, Sean Monahan of Carroll and Colin (Sonya) Monahan of Bayard; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Brown of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Vinny Joseph Monahan; five brothers: Morris, Martin, Joe, Leo and Louis; sisters: Agnes Franey, Mary Ilene Vanderpool, Martha Louise Block and Johanna Monahan who died at birth; and a son-in-law, Richard Mahoney.

Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating. Musical selections were sung by the church choir with Greg Carey as cantor and Lois Last as organist. Burial was made in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. Serving as casket bearers were Aaron Schulz, Jake Schulz, Nick Schulz, Ryan Mahoney, Chase Monahan and Tage Monahan. Honorary bearers were Dean Coobs, Troy Vogl, Clint Webber, Casey Cook, LeRoy Sherlock and Tom Thorpe. Friends and family were invited to a time of lunch and fellowship at the church following the graveside services.

Assisting the family was the Brown Funeral Home, Churdan.
