A Celebration of Life Service for Patricia Ann Riley “Trish” was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Patricia “Trish” Ann Riley left to join the lord at the age of 80 on the 13th day of January 2019. She was a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Manson immediately prior to her death. Trish was born October 19, 1938 in San Diego, California to Roland and Geraldine Riley. She had 2 siblings; a brother Terry and a sister Judy. Trish attended school in Rippey and received her G.E.D. She was married several times, but the love of her life was Merle Wayne Anderson “Andy”. They were married in Chicago in 1960 and got divorced in 1968. They stayed in contact over the years and as fate would have it, they ended up living together from 1993 until he passed in 2002.

Trish did volunteer work for various animal shelters and organizations. One story that she was fond of telling was when she went undercover to bust an animal abuser. The abuser did get busted. She had a dear love for animals, except for snakes. Snakes were her sworn enemy! She loved dogs. If someone needed a baby sitter for their dog and Trish could do it, she was there. Trish was a member of The Red Hat Club for years and did charity work with the group. She also helped on Election Day at the polling stations. Trish enjoyed puzzles, bingo but most of all spending time with her family. During most of Trish’s adult life she worked as a mixologist in some of the nicer places in Chicago. Later she opened the Yale Café and Bar. She owned that until her health no longer allowed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Terry Riley. Trish is survived by her son Brian Bodenberger (Karen) of Manson, grandson Drayden Hall of Manson, sister Judy Crabtree (Marvin) of Perry, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Wilma Irene Hunter was the daughter of Ben and Lillie (Patrick) Clipperton and was born on December 3, 1922 in their home southwest of Churdan, Iowa and passed from this life January 30, 2019 at the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 96 years, 1 month and 27 days.

Wilma grew up in rural Churdan, moving to her home north of Churdan when she was in junior high school.  After she graduated from Churdan High School in 1940, she attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.  Wilma taught at three country schools in rural Churdan.  She enjoyed teaching and as her life unfolded often served in teaching roles.  She would say “once a teacher, always a teacher”.

On April 10, 1947, Wilma was united in marriage with Floyd Clare Hunter in the home in which they resided north of Churdan.  To this union two children were born.  She was a homemaker and worked in several office positions throughout her life.  Two of her favorites were being the Office Deputy Sheriff of Greene County and the Secretary to the Dean of the College of Home Economics at Iowa State University.  She also enjoyed her work at the Greene County ASCS office and the Churdan Elevator.

Wilma was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Churdan at which she served as a Sunday school teacher and pianist, President of the local American Baptist Women and the Guild Girls’ Advisor.  In the community, she was a 4-H leader for the Highland Lassies and a member of the Friday Club and the Rebecca Lodge.

For 18 years, Wilma and Clare traveled to Arizona to serve as volunteers on Rainbow Acres, a ranch for adults with developmental disabilities.  Wilma spent much of her time tutoring ranchers on math and reading skills, which she found very rewarding. In 2009, they received the “Outstanding Service Award” from Rainbow Acres.

Wilma enjoyed doing many crafts including painting, crocheting and embroidery.  She took great pleasure in flowers. Traveling was also a pleasure as they visited all 50 states and 12 countries including the Holy Land. Wilma will be forever missed by all who knew her, especially by her family.

On March 4, 1924, Rose Bea Conner was born at home to Frank and Melissa Moore Conner of Churdan, IA, joining her cherished older sister, Catherine Hazel, on the homestead farm northeast of Churdan.  Rose Bea attended Hyland School #2 and Churdan High School.  With Hazel on the violin and Rose Bea on the piano, they played for dances, anniversaries, parties, and local events.  Through the mentorship of young Doctor Phillips Lohr, M.D., she received her Registered Nurse Degree from St. Anthony School of Nursing in Carroll, IA in 1945.

By this time, her sweetheart, John L. Siemann, had finally returned from WWII; they became engaged, with Rose Bea insisting that they wait one more year before marriage while she began her nursing career at Mercy Hospital in Ft. Dodge.  On September 10, 1946, they wed in St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan.  The couple moved to the rented 240 acre farmstead between Lohrville and Churdan, 2 miles straight north of Adaza.  That farm became the home of the couple and their five children until they moved to Jefferson in 1969.

Rose Bea’s roles of wife, mother, and farmer are well known in her rural community; her life’s work of nursing brought healing, hope, compassion, and peace to patients, family, staff, and authorities alike.  She worked wards, floor, surgery, long term, inservice, emergency room, o.b., home care, etc.  She helped establish cardiac units in hospitals throughout west central IA.  When Rose Bea reached eighty years of age, John said, “Enough nursing.”

Visitation was after 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2019 with family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the church. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry was in charge of these arrangements. Pastor Paul Burrow provided words of comfort. Honorary bearers were her grandchildren: Margie Braun, Kris McPherson, Bryan Grow, Jason Grow, Kelly Napoli, Jenni Lauer, Myschelle Silbaugh and Melissa Gannon. Musicians were Barb Brock, Dick Bardole and Yvette Bardole. The Rippey Choir sang “The New Twenty-Third” and the Praise Power Trio: Mary Hick, Brenda Roberts and Meladee Graven sang “In The Clouds.” Congregational Hymns chosen were: In The Garden and I’ll Fly Away. Following the service was a luncheon in the church lounge.

Marjorie was born August 8, 1931 in a farmhouse outside of La Porte City, Iowa to parents Robert and Marguerite (Leaming) Bryan. She was the youngest of 4 siblings Robert Jr, Pat and John.

Midge had perfect pitch and could play practically any instrument by ear. The family farm had milk cows, and her parents exchanged a gallon of milk per music lesson for Midge. When Midge was two years old, their house had a chimney fire. It was winter, and the kids were bundled up and locked in the corn crib for their safety. Midge attended country schools in the La Porte City area until 1942 when the family moved to a farm outside of Dawson, Iowa.

The family had a cabin on Myrtle Lake in Minnesota and Midge looked forward to spending time there. In fact, the entire family has spent many vacations and honeymoons at that location. She attended Dawson Community High School where she played basketball. Midge graduated in 1949 and was offered a basketball scholarship at the AIB College of Business in Des Moines, but her parents didn’t want her to travel so far from home. Midge attended State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one year prior to working as a secretary at the State Hospital in Woodward, Iowa.

Midge and John Grow were married in the Dawson United Brethren Church. Besides working hard as a farmwife, Midge was actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives playing games, basketball, music, vacations in Minnesota, babysitting and childcare. Midge and John were divorced in 1995. In 1997 she and Ben Vannatta were married in the Rippey Methodist Church and lived on their farm NW of Perry.

Midge’s hobbies included painting, fishing, cooking and playing cards (her favorites were Bridge and Hand and Foot). She volunteered her musical talent playing piano at churches and choirs, nursing homes and events in the Dawson/Rippey area. She played for the Rebekahs, a service organization (she composed her own music for the Rebekahs March). Midge unselfishly gave both food and money to those in need. She was an excellent example of using God’s gifts to help others. Wisdom that Midge would pass on to others is “leave the room better than you found it.” Midge had a kind and gentle heart. The thing she loved and valued the most in her life was her family.

In death, she rejoins her parents Robert and Marguerite Bryan and brothers Bob Jr and John. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 21 years Ben Vannatta from the Perry Rowley Masonic Home, her sister Pat Girton of Ames, IA, 3 children Pat (Steve) McPherson, Perry, IA, Doug (Pam) Grow, Rippey, IA and Jeff (Lori) Grow also of Rippey, IA, 8 grandchildren Margie (Darian) Braun of West Des Moines and sons Barrett and Colt, Kristen McPherson, Perry, IA, Bryan (Tammi) Grow of Maryville,MO with daughters Bryna and Kora, Jason (Lindsay) Grow of Bondurant, IA with children Jaxon, Kamsyn and Quinton, Kelly (Ryan) Napoli of Cape Girardeau, MO, Jenni (Brandon) Lauer of Perry with children Alyssa, Cameren and Weston, Myschelle (Matt) Silbaugh of Jefferson, IA with daughters Matilynn and Macy, and Melissa (Luke) Gannon with sons Landon and Braylon.
