Peter Franklin Klein passed away in Sun City Center, Florida on April 20, 2018 after a long illness.

He was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago on April 9, 1939 to Dorothy M Berndt Klein and Peter C Klein. Peter grew up in Rogers Park, where he attended St. Ignatius Grammar School. He went on to Lane Technical College High School Prep, where he played on the championship 1956-57 basketball team. After high school, he attended and graduated from St. Mary’s College Winona, MN where he also played on the men’s varsity basketball team.

Peter’s love of sports was fostered at The Lincoln Turners Hall where he spent countless hours doing gymnastics apparatus, track and field events and ball sports. No sport however, captured his love of athletics like basketball, which started at St. Ignatius. He continued to play weekly well into his sixties. He religiously followed both NBA and college ball right up until the final months of his life. Nothing gave him greater joy than to cheer on his favorite teams. Most importantly, he was a long suffering Chicago Cubs fan, who was thrilled he lived to see them finally take the World Series.

Peter is survived by his three daughters: Kimberly Klein Fleming (John Fergus), Wendy Klein Bauers (Mike) and Julie Klein Cassidy; son, Brett Eugene Klein (Amy); as well as his loving sister, Jacquelyn Klein Fie (Larry); nephews, Jeffrey Uphues (Aimee) and Christopher Uphues (Susie). He was blessed with eight beautiful granddaughters aged 2 to 24 years. Preceding him in death was the love of his life, Pallas Elkheart.

A service and celebration of his life will be held at a future date.

Ronald Alva Oathout was born in Iowa City, Iowa, in the depths of the Great Depression. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother. Surviving are his loving wife, Billie of Las Vegas and his four children: Kurt of Iowa, Mark of Texas, Steve and Sara both of Colorado. There are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Ron’s dad, Alva had the Oathout Funeral Home in Iowa City across from the courthouse. Ron thought being a mortician was a dead business, so he decided to go into dentistry. Ron attended public schools and eight years of college (University of Iowa, B.S. general science and DDS) all in Iowa City. He was voted ‘most likely to succeed’ by his senior class. Ron was then commissioned to the US Public Health Service and assigned duty as Dental Surgeon in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

At noon on the very first day in the prison dental clinic, six inmates tried to escape by running across a field and climbing the fence adjacent to the hospital. Guards fired rifles from the towers and quickly quelled the break. What a beginning to a dental career! The inmates called him “Dr. Tooth Out.”

Ron had many activities including 25 active years of playing team basketball. He was an ardent sports fan, all sports. Ron saw hundreds of baseball games at home and throughout the country. He had season Denver Bear’s baseball tickets for many years. His seats were next to the KOA broadcasting suite. Major League arrived and he was able to buy two VIP Colorado Rockies season tickets on the first row at the dugout alongside the bat rack.

Life is like a baseball game. Ron has a great-granddaughter up to bat trying to get to first. Grandkids on 1st looking at second base. Kids trying to steal third and Ron just slide into home.

After 30 years of private dental practice in Denver, Ron and Billie retired to Las Vegas. He loved desert gardening. Indeed a beautiful cactus flower blossomed the day he died, telling us all that he was at peace.

Services held at Desert Spring United Methodist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Audrey Ramona Morlan, daughter of Warren C. Robbins and Mildred Ameta Karber, was born September 25, 1933 in Carroll, Iowa and died May 11, 2018 at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll at the age of 84. Audrey attended rural school north of Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School in 1951. She was united in marriage with Richard Lavern Morlan February 17, 1951 at the Church of Christ in Scranton. They were the proud parents of Ken, Peg, John and David.

Audrey and Richard farmed south of Scranton, moving north of Ralston in 1962 and later to her childhood Dillavou farm in 1983. Audrey was a very active partner in their farming career. She raised over 200 chickens, selling her eggs in town with Saba’s Bakery a faithful customer. Her family remembers the many chickens they dressed at home. One of Audrey’s most successful interests and actual loves, was raising and showing purebred Hampshire sheep. She won many awards throughout Iowa and neighboring states. Audrey was well known as a very talented third generation shepherd. When she and Richard decided to retire from the sheep business, the sale was held at the Greene County Fairgrounds because their business acumen and quality of sheep attracted many from near and far.  They operated as the “Morlan Hampshires.”

Audrey was a busy wife and mother but made time to sew, garden, fish and hunt. Her sons have precious memories of hunting, and bagging their first deer with her nearby. She enjoyed cooking which was a blessing to her family! For several years she and Richard played Ten Point Pitch with their card friends. Audrey also enjoyed her neighborhood club. The couple spent many winters in Apache Junction, Arizona, making many new friends.

Just four years ago they stopped making that journey to Arizona. Audrey suffered severe heart problems and was hospitalized in Arizona for heart by-pass surgery. Life was not quite the same for her and in 2016, Richard and Audrey moved to Swan Place in Carroll to slow down a bit and enjoy assisted living.

A Celebration of Life was held for Dr. Eugene E. Houk, 84, of Jefferson at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson with Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. The processional was “Surely The Presence Of The Lord” and the recessional was “Lord Of The Dance.” Soloist, Gary Haupert sang “On Eagle’s Wings” and “The Lord’s Prayer” accompanied by Sheryl Sloan. Interment was at Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson with Military Honors by United States Navy Honor Guard.

Dr. Eugene E. Houk passed away May 16, 2018 in Jefferson, Iowa. Gene, as he was fondly known, was born April 23, 1934 to L. Rex Houk and Vera Rowe Houk in a small wooden frame farm house on the south side of a dirt road that marked the boundary between Iowa and Missouri. In due time, he was joined by seven sisters and two brothers. As the family grew, they relocated to Taylor County, Iowa where Gene attended grade school and graduated from Bedford High School in 1952.

In the fall of 1952 Gene started college at the University of Iowa. He enrolled in the Naval ROTC program and by the third year of college he had developed a career path but had an important decision to make. On one hand, he had his acceptance in the US Navy for pilot training in Florida and on the other was acceptance into dental school. Because he preferred an independent life style he chose dentistry.

Gene worked his way through college by working various campus jobs as well as farm work during the summer. It was while he was working at the University of Iowa Hospital that he met a young nurse, Carolyn Rigler. They married in 1958. After graduation from dental school in 1959 the couple moved to the Great Lakes Naval Station where Gene served as a second Lieutenant in the dental corp. After his honorable discharge in 1961 they moved to Jefferson where he opened an office and practiced dentistry for 33 years.

Gene volunteered countless hours over the years to many groups in the community and to his profession. He was proud to serve as president of the Jefferson Lions Club, Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Greene County Historical Society, Greenewood Homes, Inc. (provided low cost housing for the elderly) and Greenewood Homes (built the community center).  He served on the board of trustees of Brenton Bank, Greene County Medical Center and Greene County Medical Center Foundation. Because of his interest in flying, he served on the Jefferson Airport Commission.

A short list of his service to his professional organizations are as follows: Board member of Delta Dental Plans of Iowa (chairman of board for eight years) and State Board of Dental Examiners (chairman for eight years). During that time he was responsible for giving examinations for licensure for graduating dental students in various schools in the Midwest.

Because of his untiring efforts and leadership skills, he was recognized and awarded not only by his peers but also in his community. In 1966 he was given the Iowa Jaycees State distinguished service award. He received the ABC award for his volunteer efforts locally. Professionally he was honored to have received the Citizen of the Year award from the American Association of Dental Examiners as well as the President’s award of the American Dental Association.

Gene had interests that were wide and varied. His favorite was in the field of aviation. He was an instrument rated pilot and flew his Bonanza for over 40 years.

In 1961, shortly after their move to Jefferson, Gene and Carolyn joined the First United Methodist Church where they were faithful members. Gene was a Mason and a Shriner.

Gene was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that ultimately took his life. Even though his physical activities were limited, he retained his kind, loving, witty demeanor.  He was known for his level-headed intelligence, honesty and being a tireless worker.

Preceding him in death are his parents. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Carolyn; his siblings: Nadine (Ray) Stanley, Sarah Hamilton, Helen (Norman) Gilleland, Joan Butler, Betty (Charles) Bailey, Rex (JoAnna) Houk, Mary (Lance) Steinbock, Patricia (Stuart) White, and Ellis (Gayle) Houk; nieces; nephews; cousins and many loyal friends.

Gene would be honored to be remembered with memorials designated to the building project for the future Greene County Animal Facility.
