Lorene Conner

Lorene Marion Kruse was born September 9, 1926 on the Kruse farm near Lidderdale, Iowa in Grant Township. She grew up on the family farm during the Great Depression. She attended a one-room school house and then Immanuel Lutheran School with her siblings in Lidderdale. She graduated from Carroll High School. She then attended and graduated from St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Carroll in 1948, as did her sister, Doris, six years later.

She wed Robert E. Simpson on September 16, 1948. To this union eight children were born. Bob attended ISTC (UNI) on the GI Bill after serving in the US Navy during WWII. After graduation his first teaching job took the young family to Dunbar, Iowa. Robert taught several subjects, including science, biology, drivers ed and coached girls’ high school basketball. Jean and Jill were the young team mascots. The family also resided in Clemens, Wall Lake, New Hampton and Storm Lake. Lorene worked as a RN in each town. The family moved to Storm Lake when Bob accepted a position with the DOT as a safety consultant, serving in NW Iowa. This enabled Lorene to stay home with the children. A year and a half later Bob tragically passed away. Six children were still at home and Lorene returned to nursing, as a Buena Vista Public Health Nurse.

Lorene and Jim Conner, a widower, eventually became reacquainted, having grown up on farms near each other, as did Robert. They married July 27, 1974 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Lorene and her three young children, Jeri, Jaye and Judy, joined Jim on the farm north of Jefferson. Combined with Jim’s children, they had ten children between them. To this union there were many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved spending time on the farm. Many family meals are fondly remembered. Lorene was an excellent cook and took in stride the large gatherings.

During her lifetime, Lorene found time for many activities and causes. She always had ties to the Lutheran Camp Okoboji – winning an essay contest to attend the first week when it opened and returning many years as a camp nurse, always with children or grandchildren who weren’t old enough to be campers. She also sewed for her young children and grandchildren. Lorene was active in Greene County Democrats, Trees Forever, Garden Club, Community Betterment and AFS. She served on the St. Anthony School of Nursing Color Guard, attending fellow graduates’ funerals, including sister, Doris. The farm family hosted an exchange student from Sweden, Anna Tegler. Lorene returned to nursing part-time at New Hope Village in Carroll after the children had left home. She also worked as a RN in Arizona when they stopped farming and Jim managed a combine crew.

Lorene loved to travel and visited many of the US States. She had visited her mother, Marie’s home state of Missouri since she was a young girl. Her extended family spoke German and young Lorene could understand the language by the time they left back for home in Carroll County. She traveled to Europe twice, once in the 70’s as a leader with her daughter, JoAn and the Storm Lake Girl Scout troop and later with Jim, in the 80’s to visit daughter, Judy a high school exchange student in Linkoping, Sweden. Jim was on the West Central Co-op board and they took several co-op related trips. They also visited Jaye in Okinawa, Hawaii while he was serving on a submarine in the US Navy.

Lorene loved composing poetry and was published many years up until last year in the annual Lyrical Iowa poetry book. She encouraged her children, grandchildren and others to write and submit poetry.

Lorene struggled at the end of her life with neuropathy. She was cared for in her home by her devoted son, Jaye as she had wanted. She continued to be mentally sharp, reading the Des Moines Register and completing the NY Times crossword daily (in ink!) until writing became difficult and her eyesight failed. She stayed current on political and world news. She enjoyed phone calls from family and friends, conversing with all on any topic.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Kerry Lou; her first husband, Robert Simpson; her second husband, James Conner; her parents, Charles and Marie (Hahne) Kruse; her four older brothers: Lawrence, Raymond, Harold and Elmer Kruse; her younger sister, Doris Grade; two son-in-laws, Dave Griffiths of Des Moines and Robert Stevenson of Decorah; a niece; nephews and a sister-in-law.

Survivors include her children: Jean (Tom) Thompson of Postville, Jill (Richard) Lockey of Janesville, Joel Simpson of Charleston, Ill., JoAn Stevenson of Decorah, Jeri Griffiths of Des Moines, Jaye Conner of Jefferson, Judy (Mark) Obermeier of Edwardsville, Ill., Steve Conner of Concordia, Kan., Nancy O’Rourke of Carroll and Jeff (Robin) Conner of Panora; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Norma (Harold) and Leta (Raymond) Kruse of Carroll and a brother-in-law, Lou Grade of Carroll.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Lorene was baptized, confirmed and married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale and was interred in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery.  Visitation with the family present to greet friends was from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 28 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson.

William “Bill” McCarty, the son of William Sr. and Lula (Hasty) McCarty, was born August 27, 1937 in Lake City, Iowa and departed this life May 31, 2018 at St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He lived his life to the age of 80 years, 9 months and 4 days.

Bill was raised on a farm west of Lohrville and attended and graduated from Lohrville High School in 1956. On September 22, 1957, Bill was united in marriage to Karen Williams at the First Baptist Church in Lake City. Two sons and three daughters were born to this union. Bill and Karen made their home on the family farm near Lohrville where they raised their family. Bill and Karen were always working side by side through all 60 years of their marriage. During their marriage, Bill farmed and operated a truck line and then Bill and Karen moved to California where they were property managers together for manufactured homes communities. They lived in California for 32 years before they retired and moved to Jefferson, Iowa.

Bill was a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church until its closing. He was also a member of the American Angus Association and the Midnighters Car Club. During the time that they lived in California, Bill was president of the manufactured home communities several years.

Bill enjoyed farming, which was his passion, and would always say he was an old sod buster from Iowa. He loved people - if you knew Bill at all, you knew he loved to talk with everyone added with the stories he could tell!  Anyone that spent time with Bill could probably re-tell a story that Bill had told them. While he was property manager, he knew and talked to everyone in the communities.

Bill loved tractors, semis and antique cars. He owned a Model- A Ford, a 1957 Chevy and a collection of tractors.

Bill loved his family and he always loved kids around him and all their friends. A person never knew how many people would be at Bill’s house.

Those who are left to mourn his passing are his wife, Karen; children: Tammy (Steve) Smith of Jefferson, Billy McCarty and his partner, Rick Hansen of Council Bluffs and Dianne Dennis of Ankeny. Also, Debbie (Denny) Spencer of Cedar Rapids and Tim Williams of Texas, who were Karen’s siblings that lived with Bill and Karen and were an important part of their family, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Those who preceded him in death were his parents; son, Stevie; daughter, Joanne McCullough; great-granddaughter, Emily Jean McCullough; three brothers: Vaughn, Armour and Merle McCarty; and three sisters: Virginia DeLong, Marilyn Owen and Ruth McCarty.

John Timothy “Tim” Healy passed away at home at the age of 65 on May 23, 2018. Tim was a kind, gentle, mischievous, and simple man who was a lover of nature. He was always on an even keel and never one to get riled. Tim considered everyone his friend and would always stop and visit with others he crossed paths with on his route rides around Greene County.

Tim was born into the family of Jack and Jessie (Shriver) Healy on April 10, 1953. He was welcomed by older siblings Mike, Denny, Nancy, Joe and Sandra. Tim graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971 and from DMACC where he studied heating and cooling.

Tim started his working career at Culver Engineering. In 1979 he started working for the county in the secondary roads department as county surveyor. In 1988 he became the zoning administrator. He also served as Environmental Health Director as well as GIS mapping coordinator. In September 2015 Tim retired from the county after 37 ½ enjoyable years.

Tim was united in marriage to Jan Burk in March 1980. To this union were born two sons, Denny and Mike. As the boys grew up, and through adulthood, they enjoyed going on “tours” of Greene county where they learned about pieces of history. They enjoyed all things outdoors with their dad. Tim remained very close to his sons. Never would he allow more than a couple of days to go by without talking to them, always ending conversations with “I love you.”

In 1999 Tim struck up a conversation with an old family friend, Jane Perkins. They married and spent the next 18 years living on their acreage, in which Tim took great pride. Their chocolate labs were never far from their side as they enjoyed working in the yard or garden. They were passionate about their farm pond, spending countless hours making improvements to it. Tim’s ashes will be spread at the Healy pond in a private family ceremony.

Tim’s granddaughter, Haddie Louise, was the light of his life. Tim and Haddie had a unique way of communicating from the beginning, each patting their hand to their head. There was nothing that Tim would not do for his special little girl.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at Clover Hall in Jefferson with Rev. Cathy VanGundy of Panora officiating. Honorary bearers were Jim Wyckoff, Dave Perkins, Mike Piepel, Bob Bills, John Evers, Rick Pierce, Dennis Louk, Phil Siglin and Terry Semke. Soloist, James Healy sang “Somewhere” from West Side Story and “Live Until I Die” by Clay Walker and “Drink A Beer” by Luke Bryan were the musical selections played. The family greeted friends following the service until 5 p.m.

Tim is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Denny and Mike (Angie) and granddaughter, Haddie all of Jefferson. He is also survived by siblings: Mike(Jackie) of Dixon, Ill., Nancy(Denny) Hebner of Sioux Falls, S.D., Joe (Cheri) of Jefferson, Sandra Zeller-Healy of Nevada, Iowa and sister-in-law, Sue Healy Seifert of Scottsdale, Ariz.; as well as aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and more friends than can be counted. Craig Cuddy

Craig Cuddy was born October 12, 1949, the second of Jim and Lorna Cuddy’s five boys. Craig had a tough start in life, as asthma kept him down often. Consequently, he grew into a teen fueled by an uncertain longevity, so he decided to do as much as he could. Craig’s journey ended June 10, 2018, at the age of 68. He lived a lot in those years, as a fearless adventurer, but foremost as a great son, brother, dad to Chad, and partner to Susan DeWitt.

Craig touched many on his journey. A few highlights: ice cream cone jockey at Bud Lange’s Creamery in Dayton, Iowa (while brother Dick worked across the street at Carson’s Hardware and Funeral Home), bartender somewhere, respiratory therapist (self-help), aspiring writer, mortuary student, meat cutter, Jerry Brown political activist, Twin Lakes skiing enthusiast, probation officer (thin line between crime and justice), home health care dude, dedicated oppositional defiant, realtor, land developer, Nascar race host, rodeo TV cameraman (bull riding), tequila taster in Mexico (8 months), EMT in California, caregiver to his parents (payback), Greene County census director, harvest scale operator, golf course marshal, secret shopper, drug trial guinea pig, lifelong wandering soul.

His brother Joe says Craig had the ability to argue with anyone at full blast and they never seemed to stay mad at him, because he smiled as he made his point. Brother Dick has dozens of stories, but please ask him in person, as most are unprintable. When Craig’s fate was sealed a week before he died, he called his brother Mark to say, “And then there were four,” followed by a hearty laugh. That was Craig’s brand of humor. He said his goal was to make it to his 50th class reunion. Five days later, the hayrack carrying the class of ’68 paused in front of Craig and Susan’s house on the Mahanay Bell Tower Festival parade route, and his classmates chanted Craig’s name and cheered. He made his 50th. The next morning, his memorable life stopped, and the legend of his life took flight.

His parents, Jim and Lorna Cuddy, preceded Craig in death. Craig is survived by his son: Chad (Becky) Cuddy of St. Helena, Calif.; two granddaughters, Morgan and Mila Cuddy of St. Helena, Calif.; his life partner, Susan DeWitt of Jefferson; Susan’s daughters: Nicole (Eric) Campbell and Chrissa (Travis) Lowe; Susan’s grandchildren: Gavin, Grant and Gage Campbell; his four brothers: Dick (Marge) Cuddy of The Villages, Fla., Steve (Kathy) Cuddy of Jefferson, Mark (Kitty Sheehan) Cuddy of Hurley, N.Y. and Joe (Susan Timmerman) Cuddy of Jefferson; his aunt: Janice (Jerry) Kennedy of Grand Junction; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

Following cremation, a visitation for Craig will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson, with the family present to greet friends from 2  to 4 p.m., and featuring story telling at 3:30. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, in the Cuddy plot south of Cooper, Iowa, in Greene County. His great-grandparents, James Dominic Cuddy and Ann Cuddy, have been waiting for Craig since 1907, in the little Irish Catholic cemetery where the church burned down in 1954. We swear Craig had nothing to do with that. The view is beautiful.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jefferson Public Library in Jefferson.

We will miss Craig’s smile and humor, his edginess and kindness, and most of all, his laughter. Breathe easy, brother Craig.

Senator Grassley presented the proposal to the Senate where it also was passed. On October 21, 2002, President George Bush signed the bill into law making the Medal of Honor Flag official.

The company said that he had made an incredible mark and they praised his confidence and honorable sales attitude.

Adam and his sister, Sarah; younger brother, Conner and brother-in-law, (brother from another mother) Taylor are incredibly close. Robert, Adam, Conner and Taylor were hunting and fishing buddies. Recently the whole family, including Conner’s girlfriend Morgan, went wild boar hunting in Tennessee. Well, the girls actually went shopping and exploring. The guys’ trophies will soon be completed.

Sheana Story

Sheana Story, 28, of Des Moines, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 13 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson with Fr. Jim Bruch of Ogden officiating. Readers will be Melissa Barrett, Sarah Walker and Sharon Dunlop. Honorary Bearers will be her nieces and nephews: Kya Grob, Paige Walker, Autumn Barrett, Lillian Barrett, Josie Walker, Walker Barrett, Kylie Walker and Jude Grace. Casket bearers will be Scott Ball, Shawn Scheuermann, Cotton Langley, Carson Skinner, Dusty McDonald, BJ Wright, Allen Case, Jordi Daughtry, Robyn Illingsworth and Alicia Patricks. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Jefferson.

Sheana Marie Story graced this world on April 1, 1990 and her light was dimmed on July 4, 2018, due to a tragic car accident. Sheana was a light in her family from the minute she arrived and with a light that bright, you can never really put it out. She was an adventurous little tike who was willing to try anything you put in front of her. She showed sheep in 4H, she played basketball for the Rams, she climbed trees, rode motorcycles, she dabbled in mixed martial arts and she was strong. Not only strong in the physical sense, but strong in family, strong in friendships, strong in faith, strong in loving and caring. She worked in many fields, but really felt most at home helping others.

As an adult, she lived her life out loud. She loved out loud. She cared out loud. She gave of herself out loud. There is no doubt that if you knew her, she made an impact on you out loud. Sheana’s zest for adventure continued and grew stronger. She had a passion for outdoor activities and exploration. With her try anything attitude, she started rock climbing. Both indoors learning the sport and forging beautiful relationships and outdoors in the beautiful Colorado mountains. She was a natural and did it with such grace and peace.

She loved music and supporting local artists. She recently attended the Electric Forest Festival in Michigan and danced with her friends, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, on the rooftop of a favorite watering hole. She was a huge fan of celebrations and showed up for a lot of them albeit usually late and she would have some elaborate reason for her tardiness, but it was always a true story.

That was one of Sheana’s many beautiful qualities. She showed up. Sheana was a present and caring person and when you needed her, she showed up. Sheana also had a longing to help people and help she did, she showed up. She was actively raising money by biking for Kids with Cancer and she was incredibly supportive with raising money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

She was funny and had a fantastic sense of humor. The Thanksgiving she was supposed to bring sweet potatoes won’t be forgotten… she brought them, plopped them on the counter still in the bag and had this look of utter confusion when told she had to prepare and cook them. She really had no idea.

She had a deep love for family and togetherness. She was the rock and the glue to her mother and siblings. When Sheana loved, she loved hard and if she told you she loved you, she meant it. She loved God and read the bible as much as possible. Deeply missed will be her beautiful smile, long loving hugs, her bright blue eyes and loving personality. Our sweet little sparkler will continue to flicker in our hearts forever.

Sheana leaves behind her mother, Nancy Walker; brothers, Ty (Kara) Grace and Michael (Cassie) Walker; sisters, Sarah Walker and Melissa (Mike) Barrett; grandpa, Jim Grace; father, Richard Story; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Sheana was welcomed into heaven by her stepfather, Rodney Walker; brothers: Todd, Michael and Matthew; nephew, Brently (Bo); grandmas: Mary Ann Grace, Roberta Walker and Margaret Smith.

Online condolences may be left at www.sliningerschroder.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Sheana’s name will be given to the family.
