June H. McGrew, a lifetime resident of Greene County, passed away at the Greene County Medical Center on March 31, 2016, at the age of 104. Named for the month of her birth, she was born on June 30, 1911.

June enjoyed a long marriage to Maurice McGrew. They had no children, but after Maurice’s death, June shared her home with her sister, Wilma Hanson, and was a devoted caretaker in Wilma’s last years of life. June loved the natural world, and nurtured many homeless cats and other animals at her acreage north of Ralston.

While she relished the privacy and rural beauty of her home, June always welcomed visitors and stayed in touch with her family. As one of her nieces fondly recalls, June wrote beautiful letters, often telling a story, enclosing an old photograph, or inserting a poem. A nephew describes her intelligence, strong will and soft heart. June grew up in difficult circumstances, as did many of her generation.  In her later years, she shared stories about the Hanson family, including insights about her brothers, Judge William Hanson of Jefferson and Donald Hanson, a Churdan business owner.

June was also tough, independent and a real character. She had a lively sense of humor that she retained until the end, commenting on the state of the world or the challenges of aging with wry observations that kept her visitors chuckling.

June was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five siblings, and a beloved niece. In addition to the companionship of her sister, Wilma Hanson, June had two older sisters who died during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. Deceased brothers are William C. Hanson and Donald J. Hanson. Karla (Blaylock) Bartel, 77 years, 11 months, of Sun City, Ariz. died Dec. 04, 2015.

She was born Jan. 1, 1938 in Jefferson, moved to Torrington, Wyo. in 1950 and graduated in 1956 from Torrington High School. Karla attended University of Wyoming on scholarship and was a member of Chi Omega. She met her husband, Harvey, in Denver and they were married six months later in the Torrington Presbyterian Church, May 18, 1958. Harvey died May 29, 2014, shortly after their 56th anniversary.

Karla and Harv moved to Minatare, Neb. where they farmed. In 1963, they moved southwest of Morrill, Neb., remaining there until 1985. Both of their children started and graduated from Morrill schools. After a few years in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Santa Clarita, Calif., they moved to Sun City, Ariz. Karla retired from the City of Youngtown in 2003.

She was involved in various activities, both her own and those of her husband, children and granddaughters: garden and card clubs, bowling teams, golf, Cub Scouts, Job’s Daughters, school activities, and farming, to name a few. After retiring, she became an active member of the West Valley Genealogical Society serving as a board member in various positions including VP, President, and Past President.

Karla was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. People said “Karla never met a stranger.” Her kindness, generosity, strength and vibrancy will be greatly missed. She kept the entire family in touch by passing along what she talked about with one to others. This was, in part, due to her passion for family history. Her life-long quest centered on learning about her family’s ancestors which she shared it with others. Two of her “claims to fame” are being a 1st cousin, seven times removed of Daniel Boone and 5th cousin, four times removed of President Theodore Roosevelt!

She is survived by son, Gary of Billings, Mont.; daughter, Lori (Tim) Clement and granddaughter, Senna, Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Karen (Larry) Debus, nephews, Brian and Brent Debus, niece, Suzanne (Roger) Bedient and families all of Alliance, Neb.; sister, Paula (Robert) Foster, Sun City, Ariz.; Clement step-granddaughters, Kirsi (Patrick) Meador, Lafayette, La.; Kaili Young Pivonka, Big Springs, TX; step-great grandchildren, Saige Meador, Tristan Young and Cody Young.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phyllis and Karl Blaylock; husband, Harvey; brother, Phillip; grand aunt & uncle, Bonita and Gaylord Miller; nephew, David Warman; and step-great grandson, Thomas Young. On Jan. 14, 2016, her step-granddaughter, Kaili Pivonka passed away and was buried in Conroe, TX.

We ask that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to the West Valley Genealogical Society (WVGS) because of her lifelong passion for family history and her years of service with the Society. Donations will be used to purchase books that would have been of interest to Karla and may be personalized as a gift from the donor in remembrance. Cards and/or donations should be sent to Family of Karla Bartel, 10421 W. Floriade Dr., Sun City, AZ 85351.

Dorothy Lou “Dot” Lawton, 80, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 at her home in Jefferson.

Funeral Services were held Friday, May 6 at First United Methodist Church, Jefferson. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Larry Monthei of Hope United Methodist Parish, Cooper. Obituary reading was by Lance Lawton. Eulogists were Kati Nailor and Chuck Offenburger. Honorary bearers were JoElla Lawton, Marty Scheuermann, Esther Monthei, Roberta Meinecke, Ginny Wachenheim, Doris Tipton, Billie Gilkerson, Janette Henning and Sharon Ostendorf. Serving as casket bearers were Lance Lawton, Ethan Dunn, Drew Lawton, Nic Lawton, Will Nailor, Justin Towers, Shawn Scheuermann and Reed Larson. Soloist, Kenny Monthei was accompanied by Matt Schutt and the musical selections were “Here I Am Lord,” “Thank God For Kids,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “What A Wonderful World.” Interment was in Franklin Township Cemetery, Cooper, Iowa.

Dot, daughter of Cyril and Luella (Gardemann) Boddicker, was born January 6, 1936 at her family farm near Newhall, Iowa. She graduated valedictorian with the Newhall class of 1953. She played basketball during her four years of high school, wearing the lucky number “22.” She met Gerald during that time while he was teaching and coaching at Newhall. Following her graduation, Dot attended Iowa State College for the summer and went on to work at Stamates Publishing Co. in Cedar Rapids until she and Gerald were married on February 27, 1954.

Dot and Gerald made their home in Floyd, Iowa for a year before moving back to the family farm, near Cooper. As many people say, “Dot became a vital part of the community as soon as she ‘hit town.” Along with her favorite job of being a mother to her five children, she was active in the United Methodist Church, Franklin Culture Club, Congregate Meals, bridge clubs, and Franklin 4-H.

Dot “produced” the Christmas Eve program at the Cooper United Methodist Church for many, many years. She enlisted the help of others along with the participation of any child that attended the service. It was a production enjoyed by all.

Dot’s life was as full as it could possibly be. She never stopped. Basketball games and other sporting events were a huge part of life for Gerald and Dot. They did not miss a girl’s state basketball tournament in their 52 years of marriage. After Gerald’s passing in 2006, Dot continued to attend the girl’s tournaments, including every game in 2016. She enjoyed traveling with friends and attending the Friday Night and Birthday groups.

“Grandma Dot’, as she was known by any child that met her, especially enjoyed watching her grand-children and great-grandchildren participate in their many activities. Dot was also known for the food she shared with everyone, including her famous scotcheroos, brownies, potato salad and thousands of ham balls.

Dot and her very good friend, Marty Scheuermann, were known to take off at the drop of a hat if something fun or interesting was happening within a 300+ mile radius. The Cooper community was Dot’s extended family, and her legacy will most certainly live on. However, Dot’s biggest legacy is the love she shared with her family.

She is survived by sons: Doug (Karen) of Cooper, Ron (Jane) of Jefferson and Todd (Amy) of Dallas Center; daughters: Ann Lawton of Jefferson and Karin Lawton-Dunn of Grimes; grandchildren: Kati (Will) Nailor of Indianola, Diana (Justin) Towers of Jefferson, Lance Lawton of Des Moines, Crystal Lawton (Shawn) Scheuermann of Paton, Autum (Reed) Larson of Jamaica, Ethan, Bridget and Kylie Dunn of Grimes, and Drew and Nic Lawton of Dallas Center; seven great-grandchildren: Cooper, Maggie and Wesley Nailor of Indianola, Nathan and Natalie Towers of Jefferson and Gavin and Haley Scheuermann of Paton; sister, Marcia Dircks of Rochester, Minn.; nieces; nephews and numerous friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Lawton; parents, Cyril and Luella Boddicker; sister, Maryls Boddicker and in-laws Harvey and Nellie Lawton. Also preceding Dot were grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other special relatives and friends.
