A service for Keith L. Devilbiss of Rippey was held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at the Rippey United Methodist Church. Visitation was Monday, June 20 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Words of comfort were by Reverend Paul Burrow. Honorary bearers were Gideon Devilbiss, Megan Van Roekel, Luke Van Roekel, Luke Blakeman, Melinda Blakeman, Elizabeth Blakeman, Jalean Crosby, Berthal Devilbiss and Barry Chayet. Casket bearers were J.D. Devilbiss, Mark Devilbiss, Norman Devilbiss, Gary Winger, Joash Devilbiss and Noah Devilbiss.  Musicians were Marjorie Vannatta and Brenda Roberts. The solos sung were “I Can Only Imagine” and “On Eagles’ Wings”  with the congregation singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Hymn of Promise.” Ushers were Dennis Ulrich and Kevin Hick. Interment took place at Rippey Cemetery, with a luncheon following at the Rippey United Methodist Church.

Keith Lavern Devilbiss, son of Berthal Lavern Devilbiss and Dorothy Marie Coffin Devilbiss, was born July 18, 1938 southwest of Adel in Dallas County, Iowa. Keith tragically died June 15, 2016 in an accident in Rippey. He had been cleaning at the city park and was on his way to dispose of a load of branches when his very untimely death occurred. Keith attended rural school near Linden for five years and then Panora for a short time before the family moved to Rippey in November of 1950. Berthal and Dorothy became vital members of the community along with sons Keith and Norman.

Keith was a member of a fun-loving, very close class, graduating in 1956. They had just enjoyed their 60th class anniversary. Keith helped with the additions to the Rippey School, and seeing his talents, his employer Roth and Associates sent him to brick laying school. He worked for Roth as a brick mason and then started his own business based in Rippey. Keith was justifiably proud of his work on the Pella Hospital, a school in Knoxville, and many others, but none more so than the Rippey United Methodist Church. The beautiful wall behind the altar was his pride and joy. Keith was a member of the church and served as a trustee for many years. He has been called “Mr. Rippey” because of his untiring dedication to Rippey and his commitment to seeing Rippey flourish.

Keith was a dreamer, in the best sense, wanting to rekindle interest in the community. As is well known, Keith never knew a stranger.  He indeed was a people person and that also meant that he genuinely cared for others, helping folks in any way he could. During the years, he was literally on the road attending and presenting at Amway meetings. Keith was active in that endeavor at the time of his death, however, his love of brick masonry was at the top of it all. His family shares that many successful masons were trained by Keith. The school memorial at the site of Rippey Consolidated School is so beautiful and Keith worked diligently to see that it was done before the Alumni Party and Memorial Day. It stands as a memorial to Rippey’s School and certainly to Keith.

Foremost, and most importantly, Keith loved his family. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, adored his brother, Norman and his family and loved his parents. Rippey folks and others know how very much he loved his mother.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his aunts and uncles.

Keith’s memory will always be cherished by his children: sons, Kent Devilbiss, J.D. Devilbiss (Billie) of Blanchard, Okla. and Mark Devilbiss (Cindy) of Rippey; daughter, Kellea Devilbiss (Gary Winger) of Minneapolis, Minn; seven grandchildren: Joash Devilbiss, Gideon Devilbiss (Alexa), Noah Devilbiss (Katelyn), Megan Van Roekel (Luke), Melinda Blakeman, Luke Blakeman and Elizabeth Blakeman; great grandchildren: Teagan, Bryant, Abram, Ezra and one on the way; brother, Norman of Cheyenne, Wyo.; niece, Jalean Crosby (Karl) of Great Lakes, Ill.; nephew, Berthal Devilbiss of Laramie, Wyo.; great nephews, Colton and Hunter Crosby; great niece, Emilee Crosby; other relatives; and many, many friends of numerous grateful communities.

Dick grew up on the family farm near Cooper and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966. He began farming after graduation and joined the Iowa National Guard. In 1968, Dick married Joan Parr and they had two sons, Mike and Rod. In 1979, he moved his young family to the family farm where he lived until his death.

While farming was always Dick’s first love, later he pursued other agricultural passions. He graduated from the Worldwide School of Auctioneering in 1992, started an alfalfa hay cooperative and invested in top-of-the-line Hereford show cattle.

In his late years, he married his best friend and love, Rosalee. They traveled, sang together and loved spending time with their grandchildren. Dick and Rosalee loved to attend the many activities of their grandchildren including numerous piano recitals, vocal music concerts and sporting events.

Richard Karl Miller, son of Cecil Karling Miller and Grace Lowry Miller, was born February 18, 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa and died at his home in Jefferson, Iowa, June 17, 2016 at the age of 87.

During his life, Richard often spoke of many biking adventures he enjoyed the first 14 years growing up in Des Moines. He and his friends would bike from the Drake University campus area to the Des Moines airport, passing many cornfields in those days. However one of his greatest loves, even while fairly young, was farm life. So every summer that he could, he would spend time with his uncle and cousins on a farm near Coon Rapids. Eventually his family moved to a farm near Paton, where he met his wife Norma Joy Tripp. They were married October 27, 1946 and enjoyed family farm life for 38 years. To their union were born three children, Connie, James and Angie. Their children have endless fond memories of life on the farm. After Norma’s accidental death, Richard married Pamela Bechtel on September 30, 1985. They enjoyed 30 years of marriage both on the farm and in Jefferson. They also enjoyed traveling when they could.

Richard and his first wife, Norma, were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1959 and from the very beginning energetically worked together in a variety of Christian activities. That included working together in a local Bible education work, Bible conventions and the building of houses of worship, known as Kingdom Halls, throughout a multi-state area. After Richard and Pamela were married, they enjoyed nearly 30 years of full time ministry work helping in the Jefferson and Fort Dodge congregations. They also worked side by side at Bible conventions and the building and remodeling of many Kingdom Halls through the years. Recently, it was estimated that since 1981 Richard shared in building and remodeling around 200 Kingdom Halls.

While Richard enjoyed farming, bus driving, carpet cleaning, remodeling rental properties and a variety of other occupations in his life, nothing ever came close to his love for Jehovah God, his family, and his zeal for ministering to the spiritual and physical needs of others.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela; sister, Linda Johnson (Bud); daughters, Connie Cook (Ronnie) and Angela Fisher (Lee); son, James Miller (Robbie); Pamela’s daughters: Cathy and Carla Bechtel, Carol Borsos (Dennis) and Cheryl Wilson; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and one niece. Also surviving are Richard and Pam’s spiritual family which include Todd and Roxanne Muir and their children, as well as countless other friends and family from Jefferson, Fort Dodge and throughout the country.

A memorial service for Richard will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Greene County High School’s Auditorium, 101 Ram Drive, Jefferson.
