Eugene Edwin Muir, son of Thomas Alexander Muir and Lena Root Muir, was born August 23, 1932 on his parents’ farm one mile east of their present farm home. Gene had always lived within a close radius of his home where he died July 11, 2016 at age of 83 years, 10 months and 18 days. Funeral services were held at Monday, July 18, 2016 at United Methodist Church, Rippey. Rev. Paul Burrow officiated. Honorary casket bearers were Kristine Muir, Anthony D’Agosta, Laura Tronchetti, Adam Vogel, Kori Jo Vogel, Jaxon Vogel, Merrick Muir, Madeline Muir and Francesca D’Agosta. Casket bearers were Nicholas Muir, Molly D’Agosta, Travis Kersey, Rachel Vogel, C.J. Muir and Kayla Muir. The organist was Marjorie Vannatta and the soloist was Candace Muir. Musical selections were “Good Night - Good Morning” and “In the Garden.”  “On The Far Side Banks of Jordan” was played and sung by Don & Bert Lee. Ushers were Myron Rinker and George Millard. Burial was at the Rippey Cemetery where Military rites were under the direction of the Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583 and Iowa Army National Guard Funeral Honors. The Rippey Methodist Ladies served the lunch.

Gene graduated from Rippey High School in 1951. On October 11, 1952, Gene was united in marriage with Iva Jo Dagit at the Methodist Church in Paton. They were blessed with three children: Steve, Cheri and Curt. Soon after the couple’s marriage, Gene was drafted and entered the U.S. Army March 17, 1953 in Des Moines. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal March 16, 1955 at Fort Belvoir, Va. Gene then served eight years in the reserves.

Gene was always a farmer, working hard in his fields as well as raising Angus cattle and later Simmental cattle with son Curt, and had raised many hogs from farrow to finish. During those years, he also did custom work, including anhydrous application, baling and combining. In earlier years, he worked at the Stevens Sale Barn and during the 80’s Gene worked for Pilkington Implement in Granger.

He loved his family very much and he spent as many hours with his grandchildren as he possibly could. Even with his health greatly failing, he made long trips to be with them. His family shares how much he loved taking young family members with him to combine all day, with them perched on five gallon buckets.

It wasn’t all work in Gene and Iva Jo’s lives. They square danced for many years and had genuine friendships at home and away. Gene showed cattle for many years in the state and elsewhere. He thoroughly loved watching his family show livestock and would spend complete days sitting in the arena and encouraging them. They know he will be doing the same in the days and years to come. For 18 years, Gene and Iva Jo trekked to Arizona, first with their fifth wheel RV and later they enjoyed a mobile home. Gene, being a people person, easily made wonderful friends. He enjoyed cards, dominoes, shuffleboard, hiking in the mountains of Arizona and he was a great photographer. His photos of flowers were outstanding. He joined his friends to pick fruit to donate to the food pantry for the needy. Gene certainly had an artistic side, crafting beautiful, lighted ornaments for all occasions, can art (wind ornaments) and did gorgeous Swedish embroidery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Glen and his wife, Doris and Dwight and his wife, Sue; precious granddaughter, Katie Muir; mother and father in-law, Titus and Ethel Dagit; sister-in-law, Wilma and husband Jerry Hillman.

Gene’s memory will be cherished by his wife, Iva Jo; children: Steven Muir (Trudy) of Wayne, Neb., Cheri Kersey of Grand Junction and Curt Muir (Kelley) of Rippey; grandchildren: Nicholas Muir (Kristine) of  Wayne, Molly D’Agosta (Anthony) of Omaha, Travis Kersey (fiancée Laura Tronchetti) of Clive, Rachel Vogel (Adam) of Panora, C.J. Margaret Lavena (Rose) Hastings Conroy, daughter of Curtis Lionel Rose and Hertha “ Hettie”  Christina (Neilsen) Rose, was born April 13, 1913 at her parents’ home in Jefferson. Margaret died July 1, 2016 at the Greene County Hospital in Jefferson. She was 103 years, 2 months and 18 days old.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, July 7, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jefferson. Father Jeff Schleisman of St. Joseph Catholic Church celebrated the Mass. Lectors were Vicki Taylor and Tori Gettler. Eucharistic Ministers were Kerry Hastings and Corinne Hastings. Altar servers were Lindsey Paulsen and Jared Marshall. Music was provided by organist, Lois Last and cantor, Amy Roberts. Honorary bearers were Joyce Rings, Vicki Taylor, Karla King, Susan Mundt, Janie DiPiazza, Chuck Scott Hastings, Curt Hastings and Kreg Allen. Margaret’s casket bearers were Steve Hastings, Bill Renwanz, David Easley, Chris Hastings, Craig Hastings and Kelly Vandever. Gift bearers were Jessica Chapman, Lauren Bardole, Kelsey, Anna and Libby Hastings. Church ushers were Isabelle Smith and Jonathan Smith. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery, Jefferson. A lunch was served by the ladies of the Church at the Parish Center.

Margaret grew up with an older brother, Claude and a much younger sister, Jackie. Margaret attended school in Jefferson, graduating from high school in 1932. While attending school, she worked for the Sheriff’s family. One time she locked a patrolman in the jail without realizing it. He did not forget it. After graduating, she worked as an operator for the Telephone Office and the J. C. Penney Store.

While working at Louie’s Candy Kitchen, she met Charles Almon “Chick” Hastings, a young widower from Jefferson. She wrote that dancing was a favorite of the couple, going to dances at Lake Robbins in Bouton, The Starlight in Carroll and River View in Des Moines. They enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and her love of playing cards with her children and their spouses carried on for years. Margaret accepted Chick’s proposal and had an instant family, as Chick had a young son, Kenneth, from his previous marriage. They lived in Jefferson as Chick trucked. They later moved to a farm southeast of Jefferson. To this union was born four children: Kay, Charlene, Charles Dean and Ruth Ann. Margaret said they were married seven years before she received a diamond. The family took a car trip in 1950 and vacationed in Oregon and California to visit Margaret’s family.

In May of 1951, Chick was tragically killed in a head-on crash east of Jefferson. Ken was stationed with the Army during that time (Korean Conflict) and returned home to farm the family farm. As they had always done, the children pitched in with the cows, milking twice daily, and doing field work. Margaret continued with her recent employment at Aldera’s Variety Store (later owned by Crowleys) and adding employment with Lyons Drug Store (later owned by Frank Tucker.) She could be found flitting between her jobs, working every hour she could to support her family. The children grew up knowing of her hard work and in later years, realizing what a sacrifice it was.

Margaret renewed her old friendship with a very nice man by the name of Harold Conroy.  He asked Margaret to marry him and they were married in August of 1962 at the St. Joseph Rectory. In spite of Margaret’s concern, Harold accepted his instant family. He was a prince of a man and fit right in. This was the beginning of a wonderful marriage, as well as the beginning of her great love of Harold’s church. She was a devout member. Margaret was a member of the Guild and also enjoyed her membership and friends of the Hardin Friendly Club.

Margaret became a farm wife, once again, on the farm west of Dana. She was devoted to Harold, always putting him first. This caring continued after they had their farm sale and moved into Jefferson to live on West South Street. Her love and attention to his needs never wavered. Harold died in May of 1999. Margaret continued to live in her home, very independently! She moved into The Gardens assisted living facility in 2008, and indeed stayed self-sufficient for several years. She was kidded quite often about running over people with her walker.

Margaret was a people person, never knowing a stranger. This was the biggest reason she enjoyed her weekly trips to Tama for those many years. The bus rides to and from the Casino were the best and the friends on the bus made over her. She enjoyed the slots, and of course, her cup of chili. Margaret was a voracious reader and made many trips to the public library. Kay remembers her mother’s earlier years of being a 4-H leader and the dance costumes for the three girls that she sewed. Her family will always remember her generosity with monetary gifts to each and every child of her ever growing family. She didn’t miss birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions or Christmas. Just ask, her sugar cookies, lemon and chocolate pies were incredible.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Charles A. and Harold J.; brother, Claude Rose and his wife, Mabel; sister, Jackie Coffman and her husband, Dale; daughter, Ruth Ann Allen; daughter, Charlene Easley and her husband Don; grandson, Chuck Scott Hastings; great grandson, Alex Mundt; grandson-in-law, Wayne King; and son-in-law, Harlan Renwanz.

Margaret’s memory will be cherished by her children: Ken Hastings (Pat) of Jefferson, Kay Renwanz of Scranton and Chuck Hastings (Dina) of Jefferson; son-in-law, Jerry Allen (Lari) of Fla.; grandchildren: Steve Hastings (Mary), Vicki Taylor (Dan), Joyce Rings (Mick), Bill Renwanz (Terri), Karla King, Susan Mundt (Frank), David Easley (Joan), Janie DiPiazza (Bill), Curt Hastings, Chris Hastings (Trudy), Craig Hastings (Kerry), Kelly Vandever (Rich) and Kreg Allen (Karen); great grandchildren: Ben Hastings (Karen), Chad Rings, Darcy Conrad (Jack), Amanda Allen (Ryan), Tanner Taylor (Jana), Jessica Chapman (Nathaniel), Lauren Bardole (Schyler), Taylor King, Tori Gettler (Alex), Cody Renwanz (Leah), Blake Renwanz, Cassandra Pikarsky (Brett), Lucas Easley, Walt Easley, Nathan DiPiazza (Katie), Nicholas DiPiazza (Jennilyn), Andrea Lamphiear (Warren), Cole Hastings (Laura), Kelsey Hastings (fiancé Matthew Holland), Anna Hastings, Corinne Hastings, Libby Hastings, Corey Parson (Eric), Zack Vandever (Ellen) and Korey Allen. Margaret is also survived by 27 great-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousin, Leora Davis; special friend, Marilyn Mobley; other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be sent to Hastings Funeral Home, Box 253, 403 N. Elm, Jefferson, Iowa 50129.

Verne’s dedication to his family, loving LaVee, his sons and his ever growing family was beyond measure. That love, his church and many friends sustained him through many trying health issues.

Verne loved woodworking and making many items for his grandchildren and was especially proud of the church ramp and items within the church: the coffee cabinet, flame and cross in the entry. He was a trustee of Salem Methodist Church and had served on the Paton-Churdan School Board, Paton City Council and was Greene County Fair Pork Superintendent.

Verne was well loved by his community, his many friends from near and far, and certainly by his family.  He enjoyed their camping trips, Minnesota vacations and working with his sons. Verne continued to watch his sons work hard, which he taught them, and was proud of their many accomplishments. He gave his grandchildren and great grandchildren a lot of attention, playing board games, cards and teaching them, among other things, to play pinocle. They brought him much joy and they all knew of his great love for them. Verne and LaVee wintered in Arizona for several years making many dear friends and participating in various bocce ball leagues.

Verne was preceded in death by his parents; precious great-grandson, Lane Walker; brother-in-law, Edward Kautzky; and nephews, Matthew and Thomas Kautzky.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, LaVee; sons: Vaughn (Lori), Kevin (Lori) all of Paton and Warren (Debra) of Ft. Dodge; grandchildren: Angela Walker (Scott), Alison Cleaver (Kyle), Andrea Ahrenholtz (Kyle), Adam Bauer, Jennifer Happe (Eric), Christopher Bauer, Sarah Kelly (Joel) and Nicole Oswald (Steven); great-grandchildren: Jackson, Addison, Kierston and Preston Ahrenholtz; Chloe and Josie Happe; and Ella and Kenton Oswald; sister, Doris Kautzky of Audubon; sister-in-law, Nila Edwards (Merrill) of Prescott, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many, many friends.

Ralph Charles Robinson was born November 29, 1924, to Roy and Eva (Wasson) Robinson, in Grand Junction, Iowa. Ralph was a 1942 graduate of Grand Junction Consolidated High School. On July 6, 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as a Water Tender Third Class on both the USS Winslow and the USS Melville, until his honorable discharge on October 22, 1945. On March 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Virginia A. Aigotti in the Church of the Holy Innocents in Brooklyn, NY. Ralph and Virginia spent all but the first months of their married life in Grand Junction, where they raised their three children: Lillian, Steven and Alan.

During his work life, Ralph was a mechanic, volunteer fireman, school bus driver, truck driver, lessee/operator of Ralph’s Mobil and custodian in both the East Greene Schools and the Greene County Medical Center.

Over the years, there were family car trips to New York, Chicago, the Dakotas and many other states, including Georgia and Colorado during son Steve’s radio days. In 1976, while daughter Lillian was living and teaching in Australia, Ralph and Virginia took a three week trip to visit her there. When Ralph retired from the GCMC in 1986, he and Virginia traveled to the west coast and Arizona sightseeing and visiting friends. They returned to Arizona several times for winter visits.

During his retirement, Ralph delivered Meals on Wheels, painted apartments for the GJ Senior Housing Corporation, collected the money from the laundries, acted as handyman and assisted with lost keys, helped with the setup of weekly bingo nights for the Community Club and helped paint walls and stain woodwork and shelving when the GJ Community Library was built.

In his 60s, he took up golf and enjoyed many years of golfing at The Hill with the infamous “Over the Hill” gang. Even more than playing the game though, he loved collecting golf balls, thousands of them, which he carefully cleaned and sorted before giving them to family and friends or selling them to a dealer. A Celebration of Life was held for Thomas Richard Monthei Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 209 Main Restaurant in Paton, Iowa. Monsignor Kevin McCoy was the presider. Honorary bearers were Mike Coyne, Gary Parker, Jason Monthei, Heath DeWeese, Alex Monthei and Jeff Lesperance.

Thomas Richard Monthei passed away at the age of 66 on August 12, 2016. He leaves behind a rich legacy: a kind and gentle man, always on an even keel and never one to get riled; a good listener and a great conversationalist; a thinker with a broad depth of knowledge and recall of events that was renowned among his family members and friends. Tom was also a “man’s man.” His understanding of the workings of machinery, engines and the use of tools was extensive. Tom’s physical stature was rock-solid and his deep voice made for easy listening. Tom also had about him a wit and sense of humor that was passed along directly from his father, Wayne Monthei.

Farmee, as he was affectionately known by his many, many friends, was born to Patsy and Wayne Monthei on July 6, 1950. He grew up on the family farm west of Jefferson where he enjoyed working alongside his Grandpa Monthei and all the men on the farm. Tom helped build and drive the family race car, the famed number 32 Allis-Chalmers-orange coupe. Tom and his close-knit group of high school friends made many memories and remain very close. He drove motorcycles when he was younger and took up the sport again in later years, traveling with Deb on their Harley Davidson all over the Midwest. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1968, Tom farmed with the Monthei Brothers for several years before starting his own farming operation in 1981. He was later employed at Firestone Tire in Des Moines for 18 years as a tool and die maker, until his retirement in 2015.

Tom married Deb Kinney in 1979, and for the next 37 years they would be best friends. Together they raised four children: Jason, Heath, Alex and Libby – who brought them great pride. Gardening on their farm was a past-time Tom and Deb enjoyed together. They canned or froze their produce, which supplied them and their children until the next season. He also provided many family members with gigantic pumpkins each Halloween. Tom was passionate about wood-working and had a very impressive wood shop where he produced finely crafted pieces. Family members who were newly graduated from high school would receive a wooden pen made by Tom.

His most-cherished moments the past several years were spending time with his grandchildren, who called him “Papa.” Every Christmas Tom made wooden toys for each one of his grandchildren, and wooden gifts for all the adults.

Tom is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 37 years Deb; sons, Jason (Sasha), Heath (Katie) and Alex (Ashley); daughter, Elizabeth (Jeff) Lesperance; and grandchildren: Ivy, Abigail, Zakk, Madi, Dakota, Jaxson, Makayla and Cora; mother, Patsy; mother-in-law, Ethel Kinney; brothers, John (Robin) and Mike; sisters: Pam (Ron) Chesler, Muriel Lehman, Cindy Schwager, Laurie (Jim) Wyckoff and Angie (John) Wiggins; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Wayne; infant sister, Linda; nephew, Andy Lehman; father-in-law, Charlie Kinney; and brothers-in-law, Dan Lehman and Tom Schwager.

Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home assisted the family.
